Dear Friend,

House Approves Welch Amendment to Restore Funding for Lake Champlain Water Quality

The U.S. House of Representatives approved Peter’s bipartisan amendment to restore funding for the Lake Champlain Basin Program, which supports water quality improvements around the lake and the surrounding watershed. “Lake Champlain is the environmental crown jewel of our region,” Peter explained. “It is central to our cultural heritage and natural history, and an invaluable recreational and economic resource. It is essential that this great lake be protected and preserved for generations to come.”

Affordable Child Care for Working Families

At Trinity Children’s Center in Burlington, Peter unveiled a proposal to expand access to affordable, high quality child care in Vermont and around the country. “Finding quality, affordable child care should not be keeping parents up at night,” Peter urged. “The Child Care for Working Families Act will provide much needed relief to families struggling to find and pay for quality child care.”

Defending Dreamers

Peter held a press conference at UVM’s Larner College of Medicine to highlight the contributions made by Dreamers in communities across the country and his strong opposition to any effort to deport them. He was joined by first year medical student Juan Conde who was brought to the United States as a child by his mother. Juan grew up in Chicago and earned a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Texas. His dream is to specialize in oncology and conduct research to find a cure for cancer. “I am determined to help Juan and the 800,000 Dreamers, including 42 in Vermont, remain in this country,” Peter insisted. “We need their example, and we need the benefit of their contributions.”
