News from Representative DeGette

Dear Friend,

No one in this country should have to choose between paying their rent or paying for their life-saving medication. So, this week, I continued to work on the important issue of bringing down the cost of insulin.

On Monday, I introduced bipartisan legislation to make it easier for drug companies to manufacture lower-cost generic versions of insulin for consumers. And, on the following day, I held our first in a series of oversight hearings on the skyrocketing price of this life-sustaining drug.

We heard from several patients and patient-advocates who told us heartbreaking stories about trying to afford the cost of insulin. I’m especially grateful that Denver’s own Gail DeVore, pictured below, shared her story with the committee.

After our hearing, The Washington Post said, "Congress is pouring pressure on drugmakers & pharmacy middlemen to ease steep insulin prices for patients with diabetes." I can assure you that we are just getting started.

Next week, all three U.S. insulin manufacturers and the three biggest pharmacy benefit managers will be appearing before our committee to testify – under oath – as to why the cost of insulin continues to rise, and why more lower-cost alternatives are not available to consumers.

In addition to working to lower the cost of insulin, I’m also focused on protecting our state’s economic growth. Colorado’s marijuana-related businesses contribute more than $1 billion a year to our state’s economy. But, as long as the federal government continues to enforce the nation’s ban on marijuana, there’s still always a risk that these business owners could suddenly wake up one day and have it all taken away from them.

That’s why, this week, I introduced legislation that would stop the federal government from enforcing its anti-marijuana laws in states like Colorado, where its legal for residents to possess and use marijuana.

Next weekend, I will be hosting a community forum in Denver to provide everyone an update on some of the ongoing legislative efforts in Washington – and to hear directly from people like you. If you are available, we’d love to you have you join us and come share your thoughts. We’ll be meeting on Saturday, April 13, at 10:30 a.m. at the Swigert International School located at 3480 Syracuse Street in Denver. If you plan to join us, please be sure to RSVP here, as space is limited.

As always, thanks for your support. And I hope to see you on the 13th.

And please remember, you can always visit my website at where you can read my positions on issues and learn about the different ways my staff can assist you.
