News from Representative Himes

More than 80 million Americans who provided their direct deposit information on their 2018 or 2019 tax returns are scheduled to receive their Economic Impact Payments this week. If you are eligible for a payment and don’t receive one soon, here are the steps you need to take:

Get My Payment Portal

Today, the IRS launched its “Get My Payment” portal, which will enable taxpayers to input their direct deposit information and help them find out when their stimulus payment will arrive. Connecticut residents that filed in 2018 or 2019 but did not provide their banking information should share this information with the IRS to get their payment deposited, as opposed to waiting weeks or months for a mailed paper check.

Social Security Beneficiaries

Most Social Security beneficiaries should automatically receive a stimulus payment the way they receive their Social Security benefits. Still, some will need to take action to receive the full amount quickly, including Social Security Retirement, Survivors, or Disability Insurance beneficiaries who did not file a tax return for 2018 or 2019 and have dependent children under 17; Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients with dependents under 17; and new Social Security or SSI beneficiaries. Update the IRS by using the agency’s non-filer portal if this applies to you.

The Treasury Department announced today that SSI recipients will automatically receive their Economic Impact Payment without having to file any additional forms. However, SSI recipients with dependents under the age of 17 still need to file the simplified return in order to get the extra $500 payment per dependent.

Non-Filer Portal

If you have a Social Security Number, are not currently receiving Social Security Retirement, Survivors, SSI, or Disability Insurance benefits, and are not required to file a federal income tax return (having earned less than $12,200 filing single or $24,400 filing jointly), you must register for an Economic Impact Payment using the IRS’ non-filer portal.

In the weeks and months ahead, I will do everything in my power to ensure payments get distributed quickly and efficiently so that Connecticut residents and families can get the relief they need. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me if you have any further questions about these payments or any related concerns.
