Dear Friend,

Tomorrow is the start of the 2013 Hurricane Season. As Floridians, we are all too familiar with the destructive power of these storms. I am writing to ensure that you have the information you need to prepare for and respond to a natural disaster.

Fortunately, Florida has been spared extreme hurricane damage in the last few years, but we still need to ready our families, homes, and neighborhoods for whatever Mother Nature might bring. Additionally, I’ve been working at the federal level to help ensure the safety of our communities by reintroducing the Safe Building Code Incentive Act. This bill incentivizes states to enforce model building codes, so that homes and buildings are built with stronger infrastructure to better protect our families from natural disasters.

Begin preparing your family by reviewing the steps you should take before, during, and after a storm. By creating an emergency plan and gathering items for a supply kit, you can reduce the impact of a hurricane. This checklist, provided in English and Spanish, suggests items for a kit and provides important phone numbers. Please post it in a central place in your home.

It is an honor to have the opportunity to be your voice in Congress. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of further assistance.

Warm Regards,
Mario Diaz-Balart
