Eid Mubarak!

This past week, I celebrated Eid Ul-Fitr, the end of Ramadan, with my brothers and sisters in Southeast Queens and I want to wish all of you a peaceful and reflective summer. In the coming months, make sure to look out for opportunities to give back to those who need it most. By coming together as a community and working together, we can grow as a society to achieve the goals taught in the Koran.

I also hope all of you had a great Fourth of July weekend! It was great to see all the families and friends setting up barbecue's in their back yards enjoying each other's company and I cannot wait to see you all at our upcoming events.

Stand Up To Violence

Every time a mass shooting occurs our nation suffers a tremendous loss. No matter which community it is in, no matter who has been directly affected, these horrific acts of violence in New York, Dallas, Falcon Heights, and Baton Rouge reflect on all of us. According to the American Civil Liberties Union, the killing of Philandro Castile in Minnesota on Wednesday was the 123rd killing of a black person by law enforcement in America this year. And now five innocent police officers were killed in Dallas. That is why we must come together to create systematic changes that will support those who need it most while enacting laws that keep weapons out of the hands of criminals and protect peoples’ right to live. My heartfelt condolences and prayers are with the families in their time of mourning.

Supporting Local Businesses

Through the passage of various pieces of legislation and tax incentives, our district will finally have thousands of brand new affordable apartments available to our residents who have lived, worked, and contributed  to this community for decades. y working with City agencies and the Greater Jamaica Development Corporation, my office hosted a contractor/sub-contractor event so local businesses and Minority and Women Business Enterprises (MWBE) have the opportunity to work on the construction projects that will be taking place in the coming months and years.

Following a concerted outreach effort, the Harvest Room in downtown Jamaica was filled with local contractors who learned about upcoming projects, the ins and outs of the RFP process, how to apply to become an MWBE, and other pertinent information. All the participants learned something new and I thank all the organizations involved for putting this event together.

Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman's Open House

One of my newest colleagues in government, Assemblywoman Alicia Hyndman of the 29th Assembly District, Queens had an open and it important to join her and fellow constituents in hearing first hand the latest developments in Albany.

Before becoming an elected official, she was a highly effective President of Community Education Council 29, while also advocating for our community through community boards and civic organizations. I look forward to continuing to work with her as she represents us in our state capitol.
