News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This week, we’re back in Washington to tackle some important and pressing issues. Today also happens to be my birthday. Every year, I reflect back on the blessings I have to be grateful for: my family and loved ones, my faith, and the privilege I have to serve all of you. I look forward to another year of bringing your values to Washington. To keep up with what we're doing, follow me on Twitter or Facebook!

Sincerely,

Coronavirus (COVID-19)

As we prepare for the possibility of further community spread throughout the United States of COVID-19, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. At this point, Minnesota does not have any known cases of the virus. To keep up to date with accurate information, visit the following resources:

Congressional Personalized Medicine Caucus

Last week was the first briefing of the Personalized Medicine Caucus. Recently, I launched this caucus alongside Congressman Swalwell, Senator Scott, and Senator Sinema. Personalized medicine is an emerging specialty which focuses on individual characteristics of the patient to determine treatments.

During our first briefing last week, I was honored to welcome Dr. Keith Stewart of the Mayo Clinic, who traveled to Washington from Minnesota to serve on our panel. I look forward to the work this caucus will do to raise awareness for personalized medicine and the life-saving techniques it produces.

Minnesota Peace and Police Officers Association

This weekend, I joined law enforcement officers from around Minnesota in St. Cloud for the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association annual conference.

I was honored to join them and share with them my support for the Social Security Fairness Act, which would ensure proper retirement benefits for law enforcement. Unfortunately, the current Social Security laws penalize certain law enforcement retirement benefits through what is known as the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO). The Social Security Fairness Act would correct the treatment of these retirement benefits and is supported by organizations like the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).

I also shared with them my co-sponsorship of H.R. 1156, the LEOSA Reform Act, to improve the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act and provisions relating to the carrying of concealed weapons by law enforcement officers. I will always do everything in my power to ensure police officers have the tools and resources they need. You can read more about this conference in the St. Cloud Times here

Congressional Broadcasters Caucus

Last week, I launched the Congressional Broadcasters Caucus. As many of you know, I used to be on the radio on KTLK. I have seen firsthand the impact that local broadcast media can have on the community. This caucus will advocate for local radio and television stations and issues facing broadcast journalism in all its forms. Broadcasters connect you with your community and provide critical local news and updates. This caucus will serve as a voice for them in Congress.
