News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

After another week in Washington, it was nice to spend the weekend at home in Minnesota with my family and a fresh coat of snow! Soon, I will be hosting another town hall to meet with all of you face to face. I hope you will join me in Foley at 7pm next Friday, February 21st! Visit my website for more information.

Sincerely,

Protecting Mining in Minnesota

Congressman Emmer and Congressman Stauber at the Natural Resources Committee.

Last week, I joined my colleague Congressman Pete Stauber at the House Natural Resources Committee hearing to speak against a ban on mining in northern Minnesota. This legislation will circumvent the current environmental review process for mineral development and permanently withdraw more than 200,000 acres of land, effectively eliminating the possibility of mineral exploration.

Efforts like this threaten a way of life for northern Minnesotans. It restricts Minnesota's rights to our land and tells residents across our state that they cannot possibly find a way to develop our economy while also protecting the environment. Minnesotans have proven time and time again that we are capable of responsibly developing our state’s resources while preserving the forests, lakes, and streams that we all hold dear. State of the Union

Last week, the President gave his State of the Union Address. I was proud to have Lt. Col. Brian Winter join me as my guest. For nearly three decades, Lt. Col. Winter has defended our freedoms as a part of the Minnesota Air National Guard, including his service during Operation Noble Eagle, which occurred one week after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. It was an honor to be accompanied by Lt. Col. Winter.

During the State of the Union, I heard an important message from President Donald Trump. As Americans, we can share in the optimism and growth that America is experiencing. You can read my full thoughts on his remarks here. If you missed the the State of the Union live, you can watch it here!

Yesterday, the President also released his budget. Please share your thoughts with me about your priorities for our nation's budget.

Funding to Support our Seniors:

I am proud to announce that Volunteers of America National Services in Minnesota's Sixth District is one of only 18 organizations to receive a Housing for the Elderly grant from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. These funds will be used to provide housing for very low-income elderly citizens in our community.

Our seniors have laid the foundation for the rich traditions and thriving communities we see throughout Minnesota. In addition to elderly housing, I have supported legislation like the Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act, which improved retirement plans and removed restrictions on contributions based on age. You can read about some of my other work to support seniors here.
