News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This last month has been an important and productive time for my office. I've enjoyed being back home in Minnesota, hosting more town halls, visiting constituents and businesses, and listening to the issues you care about the most. And as we head back to Washington, D.C. and session begins again, I look forward to sharing our legislative work with you all.

10 Photos: An August Recap

1. I recently toured Park Construction. They have been a Minnesota job creator for generations and are a prime example of how infrastructure investments advance our economy and generate substantial growth. I was proud to share with them my co-sponsorship of the BRACE Act, which would make the current short line tax credit permanent.

2. Earlier this month, I visited the Lino Lakes YMCA and dropped in on the Foreverwell Coffee event. This event brings seniors together for community and fellowship. I was glad to sit in and listen to the wise words of these outstanding women. My office has made an effort to connect seniors to the resources that they need. In June, we hosted a forum for seniors and their caregivers to share resources for aging well. We will be hosting more of these events, so stay tuned!

3. I met with the Central Minnesota Builders Association. This important meeting centered around the growing skills gap our country faces. I was glad to see the President sign H.R. 2353 - Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act last Congress which will improve our nation’s career and technical education system. We can do more to close the skills gap and create a workforce equipped for the 21st century, and I look forward to working on more ways to address our workforce needs.

4. I met with my Financial Services Advisory Committee which is made up of Minnesotans in the financial services industry who help me understand the difficulties the industry faces as they serve Minnesotans. Their insights inform the work I do on the Financial Services Committee. I shared with them our efforts to see that my legislation, the Main Street Growth Act becomes law. The Main Street Growth act would enable access to capital for new and emerging ventures seeking to become the next major employer and staple of our community.

5. I toured Rustech Brewery Recently, which reminded me that small businesses are truly the lifeblood of our local economy. Their operation has incredible support from the community, and as a home brewer, I learned a lot of tips and tricks too! My work on the Financial Services Committee is constantly focused on supporting local entrepreneurs, small businesses, and finding ways for businesses like Rustech to thrive.

6. I joined with law enforcement as they engaged in their communities. Law enforcement officers must have the tools they need to do their job effectively and keep our great state safe. This Congress, I reintroduced the Abby Honold Act to help law enforcement investigate and prosecute sexual assault cases while improving care and treatment for victims - this effort was unanimously supported by my colleagues in the House. I am also a proud co-sponsor of several pieces of legislation to support our law enforcement community in Minnesota, like the Law Enforcement Officer Safety Reform Act which will ensure officers are able to protect themselves on and off duty, and of the Social Security Fairness Act, which would ensure proper retirement benefits.

7. I toured Baldinger Bakery, a family run operation that partners with McDonalds to make the buns for their famous Big Macs! Economic growth around the country is benefiting small businesses in Minnesota. Due to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, Baldinger Bakery added 30 jobs! Baldinger Bakery ships buns to 586 McDonald’s restaurants and makes nearly 66,000 buns in an hour!

8. Each year, I host several sessions of my annual Young Women Leadership Program. This event is an opportunity designed to give young women in Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District the opportunity to learn from, and engage with some of Minnesota's top female leaders. Mentorship is vital to ensuring our future leaders have the tools they need to succeed. It is an honor to provide this incredible opportunity for young Minnesotans. August marked the end of this years program, but if you're interested in applying for next year, visit my website here!

9. I visited Veterans Lake for a dedication of a healing garden. This garden will serve as a place for veterans and their families to come and find rest. As a nation, we have a sacred obligation to our veterans. I am proud to co-sponsor the Sgt. Brandon Ketchum Never Again Act which provides for in-patient psychiatric care at either the VA facility that is closest to where the veteran resides, or elsewhere if the VA facility lacks the capability. I am also a co-sponsor of the WINGMAN Act which allows for the opportunity for a veteran to share read-only access to their records with a Congressional office for the purposes of casework and advocating for benefits on their behalf. If you are a veteran and need casework assistance, contact my office here. I will continue to support veterans and their families in any way that I can.

10. I hosted my 9th town hall in St. Cloud - where we discussed some of the most pressing issues our communities face - from the rising cost of health care, to environmentally sustainable ways to mine Minnesota's natural resources, to transportation solutions that will improve the roads we drive every day. I look forward to these opportunities, to meet with you all face to face. Stay tuned for future town halls!
