News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This week was spent in the place I love the most - Minnesota. I took the opportunity to host yet another town hall to discuss the issues that Minnesotans care about. We've already hosted 9 this year, and look forward to many more!

Since I first took office, I have taken great pride in holding town halls throughout Minnesota’s Sixth District. This Congress - I have hosted a town hall in every county in the Sixth District. I enjoy having the opportunity to engage with my constituents about the issues that are most important to them as well as the future of this country.

I deeply value your thoughts in order to most effectively represent you. I am thankful that so many people took the time out of their evening to come share their opinions with me. I look forward to building on this dialogue and collaborating with the residents of Minnesota’s Sixth District in the coming months.

The recent town hall in St. Cloud brought many issues to the forefront. I was glad to share that our country is experiencing historic levels of growth. With a simpler tax code and reduced regulations, businesses have the opportunity to expand and succeed! But even with these successes, there are still concerns. In particular, people are rightfully concerned about the future of our health care system.

That is why I cosponsored an amendment to protect coverage for individuals with pre-existing health conditions. In addition, I am a proud cosponsor of H.R. 692, the Pre-Existing Conditions Protection Act. This bill and amendment would prohibit denial of health coverage simply due to pre-existing conditions. This is solution would maintain health care coverage for individuals most in need. Unfortunately, before the August recess, House democrats rejected this amendment. When we return to session this fall, I hope all Members of Congress can work together to establish standards of care that everyone can agree on.

Many are also concerned about major issues along our Southern border. I was glad to share at the town hall that Congress came together to support funding for the crisis at our border. These funds will help defend the rule of law by strengthening border surveillance and enforcement, but will also ensure ports of entry can provide basic necessities like food, clothing, and medical treatment.

In addition, I shared efforts I am taking to address an issue many ignore: mental health. Recently, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) notified the state that several facilities that treat mental health would stop receiving federal funding. I wrote a letter to CMS reminding them that they are charged with issuing guidance to states on how waivers from federal requirements could lead towards stronger mental health treatment. Minnesota knows how to best treat our communities if we are simply given the chance.

I am also an original co-sponsor of the Excellence in Mental Health and Addiction Expansion Act. This bill supports Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHCs) that offer mental health services to those in need. CCBHCs provide treatment in community-based settings, and Minnesota is only one of eight states to participate in the demonstration program that potentially reduces health care costs by providing preventative treatment for mental illnesses. These are just a few examples of the work I am doing to address the very serious issues posed by mental health issues and will continue working to make sure everyone has access to the treatments and therapies they need.

My office will continue hosting town halls in each county in in the 6th District. Follow me on Twitter and Facebook for updates about upcoming town halls. I look forward to seeing you all soon!
