News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

As we entered the 116th Congress this past January, I made sure to keep Minnesota’s economic success a top priority. When individuals have the tools to succeed, the district and our great state can excel. To make this vision a reality, last week, I introduced the Self-Employed Mortgage Access Act.

The Self-Employed Mortgage Access Act is bipartisan legislation allowing access to mortgages for those receiving non-traditional, but steady forms of income. This expands mortgage access to small-business owners, the self-employed, and those who work in the “gig” economy.

In Congress, we can pass commonsense legislation like this to create more jobs, eliminate burdensome regulations, and assist consumers.

America was founded by innovators, and no one embodies that spirit more than the self-employed. These individuals should not suffer unnecessary obstacles because of their dedication to create a better life for themselves and their family. They deserve to own a home and build their American dream, and needless government regulation should not stand in their way.

For several years, I have made economic opportunity a priority. Last Congress I introduced the Home Mortgage Disclosure Adjustment Act, which lessened the reporting requirements for small community banks and credit unions in order to allow them the ability to assist main street business owners, young families, and all Americans in search of the American dream. This legislation was included in the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act, which was signed into law by President Trump last year.

These efforts contribute to an underlying goal- helping the individual gain access to the tools they need to achieve the American dream. Our economy is booming, and Minnesota’s Sixth District is thriving. I look forward to supporting legislation to allow our communities to grow and succeed. As always, it is my duty as your Representative to ensure that you have what you need to succeed. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to my Washington, D.C. office with any questions you may have regarding this new legislation. I look forward to keeping you updated on the progress of the Self-Employed Mortgage Access Act as it makes its way through Congress.
