Weekly Newsletter

This week, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) took a major step forward into expanding the lithium industry economy here in Nevada – a step that will have an impact across the globe. The GOED Board of Directors approved Redwood Materials $105 million abatement after the company announced the second largest capital investment into Nevada since GOED was created more than a decade ago: $1.1 billion. This investment is an affirmation of the importance our state plays in the future of reducing fossil fuels and expanding the access of electric cars by closing the lithium supply chain process right here in Nevada to power a sustainable world. Redwood Materials, Inc. will be expanding its large-scale battery materials facility in Storey County and is expected to grow to 450 jobs in five years.

In 2021, I had the opportunity to visit Redwood Materials in Carson City to see the work first-hand that's helping fight climate change and create more sustainable practices.

The GOED Board of Directors also approved abatements to four other companies who will create hundreds of jobs, make capital investments and generate $256 million in tax revenue. Read more about the new projects approved for our state here.

 Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

As holiday gatherings get underway, here are some steps from the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services you can take to prevent the spread of COVID-19, influenza and Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and stay healthy through the holidays.

Q: How can I best protect myself and my family from COVID and flu this holiday season?

A: The best protection against COVID-19 and flu is to be up to date on your vaccinations. Both vaccinations are effective, and you can get them both at the same time, make a plan today to get vaccinated for full protection this holiday season. Visit vaccines.gov for a location near you.

Q: I’m not feeling well, is it still okay to go to my family’s holiday party?

A: If you’re feeling ill, the best thing you can to for yourself and your family is to stay home and get tested. For information on COVID-19 PCR tests, click here.

Q: I am planning to gather indoors with family this season, what steps in addition to receiving our COVID-19 and flu vaccinations can we take to have a safe and healthy holiday?

A: Take a COVID-19 rapid test before gathering indoors. It is possible for those who have received all their COVID-19 and flu vaccinations to still carry the disease and give it to others even if they don’t feel ill themselves. Wash your hands frequently and avoid touching your face. Limit contact with shared items or frequently touched surfaces. If gathering inside, you may choose to ventilate well by opening doors and windows, running the HVAC system, or installing high quality air filters.

Q: What is Respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV?

A: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common virus that affects the lungs and breathing passages. Most people recover in a week or two, but RSV can be serious, especially for infants and older adults. RSV is the most common cause of bronchiolitis (inflammation of the small airways in the lung) and pneumonia (infection of the lungs) in children younger than 1 year of age in the United States.

Q: What are the symptoms of RSV?

A: People infected with RSV usually show symptoms within 4 to 6 days after getting infected, and usually start to feel better a week or two after symptoms start. RSV may not be severe when it first starts. However, sometimes the infection can become more severe a few days into the illness. Early symptoms of RSV may include:
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Decrease in appetite
  • Cough, which may progress to wheezing or difficulty breathing
  • Sneezing
  • Fever

Healthy adults and infants infected with RSV do not usually need to be hospitalized. Call a health care professional if you or your child is having difficulty breathing, not drinking enough fluids, or experiencing worsening symptoms.

Resources for Nevadans

Food Delivery for Nevadans Made Through Home Feeds Nevada

Image

The NDA marked another successful food delivery for the Home Feeds Nevada program earlier this month. Kerr Farms dropped off an abundance of locally grown watermelons and apples to Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas. Home Feeds Nevada is a program through which the NDA purchases food grown and produced in Nevada for distribution to those in need. The NDA continues to accept applications from local farmers, ranchers, food producers and processors interested in selling food to be used to fight food insecurity, and from storage and transportation providers to help aggregate and transport food.

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs. .

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Get tested if you are exposed or have symptoms. If you have symptoms or know that you have been exposed to COVID-19, get tested to prevent disease spread. Learn more about testing clinics, or free at-home tests available for pickup at https://www.nvcovidfighter.org/find-test
