Weekly Newsletter

As we get into November, our State is taking huge steps to improving affordability and accessibility to housing and child care. I was proud to announce, along with the Nevada Housing Division, the first funding awards for my $500 million Home Means Nevada initiative. This funding means shovels can start digging and developers can get to work to build and preserve more affordable housing across Nevada. Learn more about the projects here.

Earlier this year, I promised Nevada would invest in affordable, accessible child care. Last week, I was proud to announce that the $30 million Child Care Capital Expansion Grants have been awarded to child care providers across the state to create more than 2,400 new child care seats. Child care providers do critical work every day for our families and for our economy. This program will help them better serve their communities and build stronger early education centers. Learn more about these grants here.

At the beginning of this week, the First Lady and I had the pleasure of hosting our annual Halloween Trick-or-Treating at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City! Seeing all of the kids’ costumes and meeting our neighbors is always one of my favorite activities of the year. Those who made it to Trick-or-Treating can view photos from the night here.

 Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

While early voting for the Midterm Election in Nevada is concluding November 4, Nevadans can still vote by Election Day on Tuesday, November 8. The Nevada Secretary of State’s Office has information for voters we wanted to share.

For information about the 2022 Election and voting locations, go here.

Q: If I receive a mail ballot, can I still vote in person?

A: Eligible voters may choose to vote using their mail ballot or may vote in-person during the period for early voting or on Election Day.

Q: Can I still vote by mail on Election Day?

A: Yes. Your official election ballot must be postmarked on or before election day and received by the election department no later than 5:00 p.m. on the fourth day following the election. You can also vote by depositing your mail ballot in a ballot drop box.

Q: I am not currently registered to vote. Can I still vote in this election?

A: Yes. Nevada has same-day voter registration, which means you can register to vote as late as Election Day. This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Noodlehead

Image

Noodlehead is the new hottest spot for foodies and families to enjoy authentic Chinese noodles with a fusion twist. We are a small family-owned business, and we hope our love and care not only shows through our food but also our staff. Our Head Chef and co-owner has over 20 years of experience from fine dining to hole-in-the-wall type restaurants. Now with a place to call his own, recipes near and dear to his heart are brought to life for your enjoyment. We want our customers to learn that spice isn't only about heat. Our menu is aimed at bringing you through the many dimensions of spice (aromaticity, flavor, sensation, etc.) with Szechuan-style and Malaysian cuisine. We pride ourselves on our self-developed handmade noodle recipe whose formula ensures maximum al dente consistency so diners can enjoy texture as well as flavor. Repeat customers receive the title of "Noodlehead" as they can't seem to get enough. From reviews and sales data, Noodleheads love our Szechuan Beef Brisket Noodle Soup and Yibin Burning Noodles. Being a Chinese restaurant, we wanted to incorporate elements of family style eating, so our menu also includes sharable tapas (appetizers) that showcase further application of Szechuan spice. The most popular tapas have been our popcorn chicken w/ deep fried basil and fried calamari, which both utilize a dry Szechuan rub that our more heat intolerant customers can enjoy. Another frequently ordered appetizer is our Spicy Pork Wontons which are hand folded and immersed in chili oil for an aromatic finish and silky-smooth texture.

Noodlehead was started by 4 Asian immigrants with a vision to bring delicious and affordable food to the families of Las Vegas. We firmly believe that food is a universal love language, one without borders. Vegas has been our home for almost our entire lives, and we've all been blessed to be surrounded by such great family and friends. In spite of the highly competitive food and beverage industry that is our city, we wanted to start a restaurant to provide a space for families like ours. Small businesses like Noodlehead are what make Las Vegas diverse and unique, and we are proud to contribute to our growing community.

Noodlehead - Always fed! Become a Noodlehead today!

Monthly Food Package for Seniors Now Offering Additional Items

Image

The Senior Nutrition and Wellness program provides food packages for food-insecure seniors throughout Nevada. Beginning Nov. 1, 2022, monthly food packages will include additional food items such as fresh produce, frozen proteins and dairy. Previously referred to as the Commodity Supplemental Food program, this program offers monthly food packages for seniors 60 years of age and older with incomes at or below 130% of poverty levels. The NDA implements this program at the state level through partners throughout Nevada. To better serve the community, the NDA has changed the name of the program at the state level to the Senior Nutrition and Wellness program.

Those who were previously enrolled in the Commodity Supplemental Food program do not need to re-enroll in the Senior Nutrition and Wellness program to continue receiving services or begin receiving additional items in the food package. Those who are not currently signed up for any programs are encouraged to reach out to their local food distribution agency to see what programs they may qualify for at agri.nv.gov/SeniorNutrition.

There’s Still Time to Apply for the Expanded Child Tax Credit

This year the expanded Child Tax Credit is available to the families with children, offering up to $3,600 per child under 6 years old and $3,000 per child between 6 and 17 years old from the IRS. Even though the tax season has ended, it’s not too late for eligible families to claim the tax benefits they qualify for! The credit is not a loan.

All you have to do is file a simplified return through GetCTC.org/nv3 through November 15, 2022. Families who received monthly payments last year should use GetCTC.org/nv3 to get the second half of the credit this year. If you missed out on payments during 2021, you’ll still get the full credit when you use GetCTC.org/nv3 through November 15, 2022.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs. .

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Get tested if you are exposed or have symptoms. If you have symptoms or know that you have been exposed to COVID-19, get tested to prevent disease spread. Learn more about testing clinics, or free at-home tests available for pickup at https://www.nvcovidfighter.org/find-test
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com

What to Know About Safe Winter Driving

Image

As winter weather arrives in Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation is reminding drivers to travel safely and avoid unnecessary trips during inclement weather.

Statewide, more than 175 crashes occurred in inclement weather between Oct. 1, 2021 and April 30, 2022, including two fatalities. Many of the crashes were due to unsafe driving in snow, ice and other wet conditions, such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely, or failing to maintain a lane and overcorrecting.

Winter Driving Safety

Winter driving safety tips are available at dot.nv.gov/winter.

  • Only travel in winter weather when necessary, leave enough time to safely reach your destination and plan your route to help avoid snowy/icy areas and steep hills.
  • Before driving, check weather and road conditions by dialing 511 or logging on to www.nvroads.com.
  • Share your travel itinerary so others know when to expect you.
  • Remove snow and ice from all vehicle windows, mirrors, lights, turn signals and license plates.
  • Buckle up.
  • Turn on headlights to see and be seen.
  • Turn off cruise control.
  • Avoid quick starts, stops and fast turns. Accelerate, brake and steer smoothly and gradually.
  • Reduce speed. Speed limits are based on normal road and weather conditions, not winter road conditions.
  • Do not slam on brakes. Apply steady pressure on ABS-equipped (antilock braking system) vehicles and pump the brakes if necessary on non-ABS vehicles.
  • Always comply with all posted traction device requirements.
  • Keep additional distance from other vehicles. This is particularly true for snow removal equipment.
  • Use extra caution on bridges, ramps, overpasses and shaded areas- they may freeze first.
  • If vehicle begins to skid, steer in direction of slide and slowly remove foot from accelerator.
Updated state highway conditions are available by dialing “511” or logging on to nvroads.com before driving. Drivers can also view live traffic cameras and sign up for free traffic alerts for their state road commute.

The Nevada Film Office helps production crews find settings with neon and glitter, ghost towns, miles of scenic roads, majestic mountains, desert landscape and picturesque lakes, your camera and crew will find it right here in Nevada.

Notable productions during the past two years include Next Level Chef starring Gordon Ramsay and airing on Fox; season 6 of the robot competition show BattleBots airing on Discovery; and Finding Magic Mike, a reality competition show based on the feature film and live Las Vegas show, airing on HBO Max.
