Weekly Newsletter

Every Nevadan deserves a home – and this week, we took a great step towards that goal. I was proud to join Clark County at the Grant Sawyer State Office Building to announce a $1.25 million federal grant awarded to the Las Vegas Justice Court’s eviction diversion and prevention efforts. Together, we’ve provided over $369 million in rental assistance to over 70,000 households. With Clark County’s new grant and a $25 million investment from the state for Clark County Social Services, we will help even more families stay in their homes. We can help families in need sooner and more effectively to prevent evictions, keep families housed and students in school, and ensure landlords’ livelihoods.

This week it was my honor to announce the State Teacher of the Year, Diedrichsen Elementary Kindergarten Teacher, Connie Hall! Mrs. Hall has inspired countless students in her decades of teaching. She challenges her students to be the best they can be, in and out of the classroom. I’m so proud of Mrs. Hall’s work to help students with all types of learning abilities succeed and her guidance to uplift other teachers so more classrooms are inclusive and successful. I can’t thank our great state’s teachers enough for their tireless work for our students’ futures – you all deserve to be recognized and celebrated. I am committed to supporting all of you today and every day.

 Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

This week, the State of Nevada launched a new website that makes clear Nevada’s legal landscape as it relates to abortion and abortion access. This site is another step forward in protecting and expanding abortion access in response to the U.S Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade and a resulting uptick in disinformation.

Q: How can I report a misleading abortion service provider?

A: The State of Nevada oversees regulatory violations, such as operating an unlicensed medical facility or clinic. If you or a loved one is concerned about misleading services you can file a complaint at this link, which can also be accessed by typing healthfacilitycomplaints.nv.gov into your web browser. Nevadans deserve safe and transparent medical care.

The State of Nevada is dedicated to ensuring people receive evidence-based medical care by clinicians and organizations with appropriate licensing. When you use the complaint form linked above, select “Other” for facility type and type in “crisis pregnancy center” to tell our staff the nature of your report. Please include the center’s address, if known. Reports may be made anonymously.

Resources for Nevadans

Medicaid Members May Need to Transition Health Insurance Providers

Image

Up to 200,000 Nevada Medicaid members may need to transition to new health insurance when the federal government officially ends the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. A recent review by Georgetown University found that Nevada Medicaid is one of only 6 states in the nation to be prepared for this, having developed all key documents and information needed for this massive undertaking. Take a look at the extraordinary resources available for members and for providers. Those resources are available for employers, providers, friends and family to ensure Nevadans stay insured and stay healthy.

Learn Tips to Stay Safe Online During Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Image

With National Preparedness Month wrapped up, the Nevada Department of Emergency Management / Homeland Security (DEM) is shifting our attention to the importance of planning ahead for safety into Cybersecurity Awareness Month. This year’s theme — “See Yourself in Cyber” — demonstrates that while cybersecurity may seem like a complex subject, ultimately, it’s really all about people.

This October will focus on the “people” part of cybersecurity, providing information and resources to help educate CISA partners and the public, and ensure all individuals and organizations make smart decisions whether on the job, at home or at school – now and in the future.

DEM is encouraging Nevadans to engage in this year’s efforts by taking these key action steps:

✅ Enable Multi-Factor Authentication

✅ Use Strong Passwords

✅ Recognize and Report Phishing

✅ Update Your Software

For more information on how to protect yourself, visit DEM’s Cybersecurity Awareness.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com

Getting to Know Your State Government

Nevada Division of Emergency Management / Homeland Security

Image

The Nevada Division of Emergency Management / Homeland Security (DEM) serves as the State of Nevada’s coordinator of resources before, during, and after declared and non-declared emergencies and disasters within the state. The division’s overarching mission – preparing for, protecting against, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all hazards, threats, and emergencies. All emergencies are locally executed, state managed and federally supported.

Nevada’s emergencies and disasters can be human made (primarily terrorism), technological (train derailment), or natural (primarily fire, flood, and earthquake), and DEM’s role is to ensure communities across the state have the capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from each. The Division has a small staff who are highly skilled in staffing actions, analyzing situations, supporting and planning response efforts, and accessing private, public, and military capabilities to help civil authorities. DEM staffers are committed to fulfilling our mission by using the resources provided by the local, state, and federal government to ensure that these goals are met.

Specific to our strategic planning effort, the division’s vision, mission, and core values are provided here as additional refinements to the DEM statutory duties and responsibilities and the Governor’s strategic planning framework.

Vision: Building Nevada resilience through coordination and partnerships.

Mission: Coordinating mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery programs and resources through partnerships to build resilient communities for Nevada’s residents and visitors.

Values: Leadership, Accountability, and Teamwork

DEM’s recent highlights and successes:

  • DEM conducted three regional preparedness workshops in Elko, Carson City and Las Vegas Nevada. Each workshop was an interactive forum for stakeholders to engage in coordinating preparedness priorities, mitigation and recovery measures, resource management and grant opportunities, and identifying the potential threats and hazards in their area.
  • Grants section enhancements by simplifying the process of the emergency management process for sub-grantees.
  • Support local governments and state agencies with COVID-19 response efforts for three years (Warehouse, PPE, Vaccine playbook and vaccinations, GOTVax, testing and vaccines, Mobile Vaccine Units)
  • Support local jurisdictions with resources and coordination efforts with the following:
           ○ Flooding (Nye, Moapa, Clark, Elko)
           ○ Fire (Tamarack, Caldor, Hazen)
  • Support in the planning, mitigation, and recovery efforts:

           ○ New Years Eve
           ○ Elections
           ○ Civil unrest
           ○ Geopolitical tensions
           ○ Supply chain issues with fuel
           ○ Snow humanitarian rescue

Disasters and emergencies can strike at any time. It's important to have an emergency plan at home, work, vacation or on the road. Start creating your plan today.
