News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This week is Computer Science Education Week!

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields will only continue to grow in our workforce. In fact, today 58% of all new jobs are in computing.

We must encourage the next generation to explore and innovate in order to meet the demands of future economy’s needs that we cannot yet predict.

Since its inception, my office has participated in the Congressional App Challenge to encourage middle and high school students to develop their own software application (or, an “app”).

Congratulations to this year’s Congressional App Challenge winners from Central Middle School in Norwood Young America: Josie Beneke, Kourtney Harms, Emma Hecksel, and Lauren Schmidt!

Their app, ‘Lose it!’ is designed to manage the user’s weight. Those that use the app receive diet and exercise tips targeted towards weight loss. The app would also provide organic recipes and at-home exercises specifically for each unique user.

Students like Josie, Kourtney, Emma and Lauren keep our nation moving forward to meet the needs of tomorrow’s workforce. Congratulations to these young Minnesotans! I look forward to seeing what they do in the future.

Sincerely,
