Weekly Newsletter

This week, I was proud to help cut the ribbon on the newly-opened Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. This marks a major step forward in our commitment to bring accessible and life-saving health care to Southern Nevadans. I’ve been proud to support the development of this school from its construction to the grand opening -- when I signed legislation to give $25 million for the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine, I knew it would be one of the best investments in the future of our state. Together, we’ve made huge investments into the school and growing medical district to provide quality, affordable and sustainable health care – as well as first-class education and hands-on experience for our students.

That’s why I’m proud to announce that in the next legislative session, I will be using one of my five dedicated bills to create the Las Vegas Academic Medical District to offer education for specialized services, develop centers for research and create a more comprehensive medical system. The State will work with the Kerkorian School of Medicine, the City of Las Vegas and community leaders to develop the Las Vegas Academic Medical District with goals to improve patient outcomes, bolster research and innovation in our health care system and create high-paying jobs for Nevadans

 Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

This week, the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services, alongside Governor Sisolak and Attorney General Aaron Ford, announced the creation of a Joint Advisory Task Force to address the increasing rates of fatal and non-fatal drug overdoses and bring awareness to resources.

Q: What should people know about overdose?

A: There are resources available across the State for those at risk. Knowing the signs and what to do can be life-saving:

  • Know the signs of overdose: Small, constricted pupils; falling asleep or loss of consciousness; slow, shallow breathing; choking or gurgling sounds; pale blue, cold skin, limp body.
  • Overdose doesn’t have to be fatal: Administer Naloxone, call for medical help.
  • Find Naloxone, an overdose reversal medication, here.
  • Fentanyl is a lethal drug: Fentanyl is an inexpensive drug that is now pervasive in the national illicit drug supply. Fentanyl has been found in heroin, and stimulants, like meth and cocaine.
  • If someone is going to use, they should be testing their drugs: It is impossible to tell if fentanyl is in a drug just by looking at it.
  • Find fentanyl testing strips here

State of Nevada Joins Department of Defense SkillBridge Program to Offer Separating Service Members State Internships and Training

Image

The State of Nevada has been approved as a U.S. Department of Defense SkillBridge program employer partner, which will allow separating service members from all branches of the U.S. armed forces to complete internships and training with state government agencies in preparation for the transition to civilian employment. The program provides separating service members a pathway to gain valuable experience in the public sector and exposure to state career opportunities. Internships and training are offered across twelve different occupational groups—including those such as public safety, health, and fiscal services—and are available within numerous state agencies. The program allows separating service members to complete internships with employer partners for periods up to 180 days during the last six months of the individual’s service contract. Service members participating in the SkillBridge program receive their military compensation and benefits while employer partners provide training and work experience.

Interested candidates can review the program standards, competency matrix, and submit an online interest form to identify the positions and fields of interest here.

Candidates who would like more information can also contact Veterans Coordinator Doug Williams at dougwilliams@admin.nv.gov.

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) marked the first food delivery of the Home Feeds Nevada program on Wednesday, Sept. 21, with 600 pounds of locally grown tomatoes from Blue Lizard Farms in Caliente to Three Square Food Bank in Las Vegas. Home Feeds Nevada is a program through which the NDA purchases food grown and produced in Nevada for distribution to those in need. Food insecure Nevadans are encouraged to reach out to their local food banks for assistance. The NDA is accepting applications from local farmers, ranchers, food producers and processors interested in selling food to be used to fight food insecurity, and from storage and transportation providers to help aggregate and transport food. Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com
