Weekly Newsletter

The State of Nevada officially launched NevadaBuilds.com -- a dedicated website to highlight infrastructure investments coming to Nevada through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, from transportation to clean energy to high-speed internet access and future projects. This site will not only highlight the projects improving our infrastructure but will also include information on resources available to Nevadans.

Additionally, I was proud to appoint the State Infrastructure Bank’s first-ever Executive Director, Asheesh S. Bhalla. With Director Bhalla at the helm, we’ll be set up for success as we work to invest in critical projects to help our state flourish and create good-paying jobs for Nevadans. After we made the state’s first-ever investments into the Infrastructure Bank, I’m proud of the work done by the Treasurer’s Office to get the Bank running and ready to make integral investments into affordable housing, education and more. Learn more here.

I was honored to visit Eddy House, in Reno recently. The non-profit provides shelter for homeless, runaway, foster and at-risk youth. I attended their weekly Table Talk to discuss resources available in Northern Nevada. Eddy House was recently awarded a $1.5 million Community Recovery Grant from the State. The grant will help support the opening of a new independent living program for aged out foster youth. I’m proud to stand alongside all of you who are working tirelessly for the safety and well-beings of our communities.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

There are several different programs across Nevada to help all of our residents find employment. To find employment opportunities the state offers, click here.

The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation offers a specific program to assist those with disabilities to secure employment.

Q: What is the 700-Hour Program?

A:The 700-Hour Program is facilitated by DETR’s Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation to assist people with disabilities secure employment within State agencies. The program can lead to fulfilling employment opportunities with state benefits.

There are three steps to finding success through the program:

  1. Step 1: A counselor will help determine the jobs you are qualified for within the 700-Hour Program.
  2. Step 2: Internal Job Development Team will work with you to review, edit and verify minimum qualifications and complete two practice interviews. After the profile and practice interviews are completed, the counselor will create the 700-Hour Certification Letter, which certifies you are qualified for the jobs identified on your job development form.
  3. Step 3: The program director will submit the completed packet to the State of Nevada Department of Human Resource Management and your counselor will be notified when you have been added to the 700-Hour list for the jobs you were qualified for.
If you are already a Vocational Rehabilitation client, your counselor can help you start the process. If you aren’t, reach out to Tammy Riley at 775-823-8150 (tjriley@detr.nv.gov) and you will be assigned a qualified counselor who will help you.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Half Bird Chicken & Beer

Image

Chef Brian Howard, and business partners Emmanuel Chereque and John Anthony wanted to create a new, LEVEL UP, concept for everyday dining that is anything but ordinary. With that goal in mind the trio behind the celebrated Las Vegas restaurant, Sparrow + Wolf, opened Half Bird Chicken & Beer earlier this month to bring a bold, flavor-packed, and healthy-ish take on rotisserie chicken to the Chinatown neighborhood.

Half Bird features rotisserie chicken in all forms with delectable flavors from around the world, directly inspired by Chef Brian Howard and his team’s travels and desire to learn about and enjoy a variety of ingredients.

“We want Half Bird to be that spot where friends can get together for drinks before a Golden Knights’ game, families can enjoy an easy yet exciting dinner, and basically create a memorable experience for every guest that walks through our door…with our cluckin’ good food,” said Chef Brian Howard.

Half Bird is your old favorite, jacked up on complex + worldly flavors featuring a menu of rotisserie chicken, as well as a selection of sandwiches like the Spring Mountain “Hot Chicken” Sandwich, sides like googey Mac ‘N Cheese inspired by Chef Howard’s 7-year old son, family meals, and more.

In addition to celebrating a new opening, the team formed their hospitality group this year, Spaghetti on the Wall and celebrated Sparrow + Wolf’s fifth anniversary. Sparrow + Wolf has received notable success nationally and locally with its simple and inspired menu of modern American favorites. The restaurant's cookery is grounded in joyful food and time-honored technique, using the highest-quality meats, locally sourced produce, and house made breads. At its heart, Sparrow + Wolf is the welcoming warmth of a dinner party.

The State of Nevada is Lighting Up in Turquoise and Teal for Suicide Prevention Week, Highlighting Resources

Image

From September 4-10, you might see businesses and buildings across the state change their external lighting to reflect a message of hope to Nevadans that they are not alone and to remember the lives lost to suicide. Nevada had 603 deaths by suicide in 2020, more than homicide and vehicle accidents combined. But our efforts are helping. The Silver State currently ranks 12th in the nation for suicide rates, moving out of the top 10 where it ranked for many years.

Through statewide training and collaboration with local partners, the Nevada Office of Suicide Prevention is destigmatizing reaching out for help and talking about suicide. If you or someone you know is struggling, you can call, text, or chat 988 -- the free, 24/7, confidential suicide and mental health lifeline. There is help available; you are not alone.

For more information on training and resources, please visit SuicidePrevention.NV.Gov.

Nevadans Reminded to Plan Ahead During National Preparedness Month

Image

September is National Preparedness Month, an annual opportunity to remind all Nevadans how important it is for individuals, families and communities to plan ahead and be prepared for disasters and emergencies that can happen at any time. Disasters can strike anytime and anywhere and it's important to take the time now to do some simple things that will help keep you safe when disaster strikes.

Make a Emergency Plan for When a Disaster Strikes:

  • Talk to your family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Your family may not be together if a disaster strikes, so it is important to know which types of disasters (wildland fires, floods, earthquakes, etc.) could affect your area, and know how you will contact one another or reconnect if separated. Know how you’ll contact one another and reconnect if separated.
  • Establish a family meeting place that’s familiar and easy to find. Choose a primary and secondary meeting place in case an emergency affects your home or neighborhood and designate an out-of-state contact for family members to call if separated.
  • Plan today for different scenarios that could occur when family members are at work, school or home.
  • Teach youth to prepare for emergencies.
  • Businesses, community organizations and families should participate in safety drills and exercises.
Throughout September, DEM will post daily preparedness tips on the following platforms:

DEM also maintains the state’s Plan Ahead Nevada Preparedness website, a one-stop resource for detailed information about what to do before, during and after disasters.

During disasters, DEM uses the website, and the social media platforms listed above to provide critical information about the incident, including shelter locations, road closures, safety information, photos and more.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com
