Video of Congressman Andy Barr speaking at the Breaking the Bronze Monument Ceremony on Wednesday, August 19.

This year, America celebrates the Centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment and the great contributions of the Women’s Suffrage Movement in our country.  In Lexington, we commemorated this moment by unveiling a new Breaking the Bronze Ceiling Monument, which recognizes the contributions of women in Lexington and Fayette County toward this historic movement.  It was an honor to participate and speak at this special event.  To receive this e-newsletter on a regular basis, including all updates on the federal response to the novel coronavirus and other matters, please subscribe by visiting https://barr.house.gov/newsletter-subscription.

I want to thank Councilmember Jennifer Mossotti, who chaired the Breaking the Bronze Ceiling Committee, and Councilmember Kathy Plomin for their leadership in bringing this idea to realization.  My colleague Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), joined my letter of support for this project to the National Endowment of the Arts (NEA).  NEA approved a $20,000 grant in June of this year, helping the project get across the finish line.  I also co-sponsor Congresswoman Maloney’s legislation to establish a National Women’s History Museum as part of the Smithsonian.

Video of Congressman Barr speaking at the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) Veterans Education and Transition Support (VETS) Center Dedication Ceremony on Tuesday, August 25.

I was privileged to participate in the Eastern Kentucky University (EKU) dedication ceremony for the Veterans Education and Transition Support (VETS) Center on August 25.  This space will provide resources to assist our student-veterans and servicemembers making for an easier transition to civilian and student life for our veterans.

By creating the VETS Center, EKU builds on their commitment to our veterans who are seeking to further their education.  The establishment of a space specifically for veterans, active servicemembers and their families, helps to ensure the adjustment to civilian life does not have to be made alone.  Congratulations to EKU and student veterans at the university.  As a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, I will continue to advocate for veterans in Congress.

Progress Made on State-of-the-Art Job Training Facility in Estill County

This month, I visited the Estill County Area Technology Center that is currently under construction.  Expected to be completed in August of 2021, this building will be a state-of-the-art job training facility that will empower hundreds of Kentuckians with the skills to thrive in the 21st Century economy.  Jobs such as advanced manufacturing, diesel mechanics and health science, information technology and engineering (STEM), will be areas of focus at the new job training center.

I am proud to have supported the Estill County Board of Education’s Economic Development Grant application with the U.S. Department of Commerce, which was approved last year and provided $4 million in grant funding for this project and I look forward to returning next year to visit the facility when it is operational.
