Weekly Newsletter

This week, the Interim Finance Committee approved significant and historic programs for mental and public health – We promised Nevadans we would invest our federal dollars into programs that will make a difference in their lives, and I’m proud to put forward those programs and work with legislators to get them moving. Click here to learn more about what legislators approved.

As part of my Nevada Climate Series 2022, this week I visited air quality monitoring sites in Reno to discuss the growing health impacts of wildfire smoke and highlight the great work being done by public and private agencies to protect Northern Nevada communities. I visited Washoe County Health District’s nationally-accredited air quality monitoring site – it's one of three sites nationwide that’s working with the Environmental Protection Agency to monitor air quality associated with wildfire. To equip Nevadans with knowledge they need to stay safe from fire smoke, I’m proud to debut these resources for families to prepare.

I was proud to attend the 26th annual Lake Tahoe Summit at Nevada’s beautiful Sand Harbor State Park on Tuesday. Climate change is impacting the Tahoe basin, and we need to take action to protect this treasure for our residents, tourists and economy.

It’s also the first week back at school for Washoe County School District and Carson City School District students and educators. I’m always excited to visit our children and teachers on the first week of school. It’s great to see the optimism and excitement from the teachers and kids for this upcoming school year!

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

As the school year starts across the State, students can start to feel the pressures of school work, socializing and extracurriculars. There are resources available statewide to help with mental health wellness.

Q: What can I do if I’m concerned about my child?

A:
There are free, immediate resources available. In May, NAMI Western Nevada launched a “Teen Text Line.” Anyone ages 14-24 in need of non-crisis support can confidentially text (775) 296-8336 from noon to 10 p.m., seven days a week, 365 days a year. Parents and other concerned loved ones can prompt an initial text to their teens by sending a request to NVtextline@gmail.com

Last week, the Governor joined the launch of a Youth Suicide Prevention Campaign with Hope Means Nevada and SilverSummit HealthPlan to connect youth at risk for suicide to mental health resources. By going to MentalHealthResourcesNV.org , visitors can find help for either themselves or a loved one.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: NVO Construction

Image

Centerline Structural Innovations, Inc. DBA NVO Construction (“NVO”), was born from an urgent need. As Reno and surrounding areas faced a population explosion nearly twice the national average, Founder and CEO, Cheryl Lewis, began exploring ways to address the critical housing need in Northern Nevada and California. Following the NVO motto, “Do the right thing, the right way”, she believed there was an opportunity to bring more affordable housing to Nevadans more quickly and cost effectively. Through extensive research, she and her team decided to focus on revolutionizing the framing process.

Framing is an early critical path activity in all major building projects and accounts for approximately 18-20% of every project budget. NVO recognized that automation and innovation must be incorporated into the framing industry to achieve better productivity. In early 2021, NVO secured a 75,000 square foot indoor facility located in North Reno and created a state-of-the-art plant complete with automated saws and a software-optimized workflow. NVO’s approach ensures product quality is maximized, material waste is minimized, overall safety is improved, labor costs are controlled, and onsite construction is greatly accelerated.

While skilled labor in the West was once plentiful and relatively inexpensive, builders now find it increasingly difficult to staff jobsites and the use of premade components helps save time and money for construction projects.

Early in its development, NVO applied for and received assistance from the Governor’s Office of Economic Development in the form of tax abatements related to sales tax on capital investments in equipment and employment taxes. In 2021, NVO was awarded the Nevada Center for Entrepreneurism and Technology (“NCET”) Technology Start-up of the Year and has been recognized by EDAWN as a New and Expanded Company Honoree.

Back-to-School Checklist: Necessities to Keep Kids Healthy Throughout the Year

Image

In Nevada, most school districts are already back in session, or are resuming in the following weeks. With the latest Omicron subvariant – on top of cold and flu season – this has some parents, teachers, and even students on edge when it comes to protecting their health. Fortunately, there are some steps parents can take to keep their kids – and school districts – healthier this year.

Test for COVID early and get flu shots scheduled:

It’s important for parents to set up an appointment before sending their children back to school, especially if they start showing flu-like symptoms. Nevada law requires vaccinations for childcare, schools, and colleges, with the exception of religious beliefs or a medical condition.

Keep your kid home if they are sick:

If your child is feeling unwell now or during the start of the school year, it’s important to have them stay home to stop the spread of the virus.

Identify factors impacting mental, emotional health:

The first step to supporting your child is through conversation; be present and initiate discussions regularly. Whether it’s establishing routine conversation at the dinner table, or private one-on-one conversations, both parents and teachers can bond with their children and students, which helps recognize changes in mood or behavior.

Easy vaccine/shot scheduling portal:

The State of Nevada has made scheduling immunizations easier by making appointments for COVID-19 vaccines, flu shots, and other shots from your home. Fill out the screening questionnaire here and schedule your appointment.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19:

  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com

Getting to Know Your State Government

Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy

Image

The Nevada Governor's Office of Energy (GOE) advises the Governor and Nevada Legislature on energy-related policy and oversees energy programs required through statute. GOE’s mission is to ensure the wise development of Nevada's energy resources in harmony with local economic needs and to position Nevada to lead the nation in renewable energy production, energy conservation, and the exportation of energy.

Because Nevada does not produce fossil fuels, GOE achieves its mission through program and policy work in five categories:

  • Renewable energy
  • Energy efficiency
  • Transmission & markets
  • Transportation electrification
  • Energy assurance & cybersecurity
With the State’s Climate Strategy at the forefront, GOE is focused on collaborating with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, the Nevada Department of Transportation, the Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources, electric utility providers, and other stakeholders to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) from both the energy sector and the transportation sector.

GOE was created in 1975 to plan for energy emergencies and develop programs to encourage energy efficiency in all sectors. GOE is a small, but mighty, team and is currently focused on securing funding under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to strengthen renewable energy, grid resilience, energy efficiency and transportation electrification in the Silver State.
