Weekly Newsletter

Great news, Nevadans: Employment in our state has reached a new all-time high and we’ve recovered all of the jobs lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nevada is ahead of the United States total in recovering jobs—we are at 3,000 more jobs than the previous peak from February 2020. The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s June 2022 economic report showed that not only do we have more jobs than ever – but we our economy is stronger as a whole. Nevada has made tremendous progress to diversify our economy outside of our hospitality industry – we’ve created good-paying jobs in other industries.

This week, I stopped by the One-Stop Career Center at the East Las Vegas Library to highlight the work being done to continue helping jobseekers and employers. The One-Stop Career Centers can be found throughout the state to help Nevadans explore careers, find training and search for jobs. We’re going to continue to work to bring in new, good-paying jobs and careers for Nevadans and ensure they have access to the training and resources they need to succeed in their jobs. Learn more about the economic report here.

From the community level to the state level, we’re working to support those seeking employment and businesses in our great State. This week, the State of Nevada completed awarding $30 million in the Community Recovery Grant program that was aimed at helping non-profits recover from hardships experienced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Interim Finance Committee awarded dozens more non-profits funding. All of these non-profits provide direct and immediate services to help Nevadans – with critical help from food assistance to shelter and medical care. Click here to learn about the program and the non-profits that will be getting assistance to expand their services.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

Utility bills can rack up during the summer months in Nevada, and my office has been receiving questions about how to save. I’m committed to helping Nevadans save on utility bills -- that’s why I’ve worked with the Nevada Housing Division to compile tips for Nevadans dealing with extreme heat.

Q: What is weatherization?

A: Weatherization is the process of protecting a building against the negative effects of the weather and conserving energy.

Q: How do I weatherize my home?

A: There are a few easy steps you can take to weatherize your home:

  • Change the furnace filter every three months
  • Seal air cracks or gaps by adding door sweeps to exterior doors, using caulk to seal gaps and cracks, and adding foam sealing gasket to electrical outlets
  • Insulate water heater and flush to remove sediment and improve flow (tutorial here)
  • Use LED light bulbs as they use up to 90% less energy and last up to 25x longer
  • Change ceiling fan rotation with the season. For cooling, run fan counterclockwise. For warming, run clockwise.

Nevada’s Weatherization Assistance Program helps lower costs for qualifying households with conservation measures (including installing energy efficient light bulbs and adding insulation) at no cost to the household. Click here to apply.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Sugar Love

The Philosophy

Classic confections with a modern twist. At Sugar Love, we believe that candy should be treated like every other food we consume it should be high quality and made with the best ingredients. Our belief in a balanced life means making time to indulge yourself and others in order to slow down from our often-hectic schedules. So, take a moment to savor the flavor with a glass of wine, whiskey or great conversation. Life truly is sweet!

For More information on what candies are available and how to order online, go to Sugarlovecandies.com. The tip we received from maker Krysta Bea Jackson is that the most popular selling item right now that is coming out of her kitchen in Sparks is Bourbon Pecan Brittle.

The Maker

Image

Hi there - my name is Krysta Bea Jackson and I'm the founder of Sugar Love. I have lived in the world of good food from my earliest memories in my mom's restaurant. I quickly learned that good food has got to be the best way to bring joy and show love. Yes, my family is from the south, how did you know?

And if you hear me talk, you'll know I was raised on the west coast - man, what I'd give for a southern accent! I started Sugar Love in February 2015 after a winding path brought me back to my passion: real ingredients that taste really good, especially when it comes to candies.

And through it all, I remind myself of why I am doing what I am doing: to slow down and enjoy what's truly good in life. For me that is friends and family, pets, good food and creative curiosity.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread at gatherings this summer. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19
  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com
