Weekly Newsletter

It’s been six months since I gave my State of the State Address where I laid out promises to improve the quality of life and lower the cost of living for Nevadans with initiatives from housing to child care to mental health. Since then, it’s clear that Nevada is on the move – we have made progress on every single promise made. I’m so proud of the work done across the State every day to build a brighter future for Nevadans and keep our promises. None of this would have been possible without the dedication from our State lawmakers, who have ensured we are approving and fast-tracking policies that work for working families. Learn more about the Promises Made and Promises Kept in the last six months.

Part of those promises includes investing infrastructure. This week, I toured the new southbound I-580 ramps at the Reno spaghetti bowl with the Nevada Department of Transportation as the construction reached a milestone. This project will address one of the most dangerous sections of the interchange, keep more drivers safe and help reduce traffic by creating wider access to the freeway. These projects are also about jobs – much-needed jobs for hundreds of Nevadans.

Thursday night, I was proud to host the 53rd annual Wolf Pack Dinner at the Governor’s Mansion and celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX, preventing gender-based discrimination in education. For the very first time, we had a female keynote speaker for the Wolf Pack Dinner, Women’s Basketball Champion and Olympic Gold Medalist, Rebecca Lobo. Rebecca is an inspiration to young women, on and off the field. It was my honor to celebrate the women making history in the Silver State with the Nevada Wolf Pack. I’m thankful to my team at the Governor’s Mansion and University of Nevada, Reno for their hard work to make this event so great.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

My Office gets calls from constituents across the State – asking about resources available for housing, utilities, COVID-19, mental health assistance and much more. There’s a phone line, app and website, Nevada211.org, that Nevadans can use to get a direct link to assistance available, Nevada 211.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Filoso Barber Brand

Image

When the pandemic hit, Chicano and Las Vegas native barber Francisco Carbajal was suddenly out of work because of social distancing. He quickly looked for alternative ways to serve barbers like himself through posting tutorials on YouTube. What he discovered was a large audience of barbers that were experiencing a shortage of barber tools and products.

With love for the Chicano culture and after noticing there was a need for goods and services for Latino barbers, Francisco teamed up with Jorshua Nieto, an entrepreneur from Monterrey, Mexico. Together, they created the Filoso Barber Brand. With the goal to represent the culture and inspire barbers, while embracing other cultures into the community, Filoso Barber Brand has now become the first Latino owned business to create a barber blade in the country, putting Chicanos and Latinos at the top of the barber industry.

Their philosophy is that Filoso is more than a barber brand that provides the highest quality tools and products at a low cost, it’s a representation of the culture that empowers and inspires Latino barbers to be the sharpest barbers, entrepreneurs, and family members of the community. By providing the highest quality products, like their signature Filoso blade, barbers no longer have to worry about their tools failing, giving them the confidence to provide the best service and focus on growing their business.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread at gatherings this summer. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19
  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com

Getting to Know Your State Government

Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation

Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation

The Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation (DETR) was created to serve as a bridge between employers and workers. DETR is the state’s leading workforce agency. Our focus is helping people find jobs, training, and careers as well as to help businesses find the workers they need to thrive. DETR’s goal is to provide workforce solutions to Nevadans.

During the pandemic, DETR helped over 500,000 people collect unemployment insurance benefits and over 150,000 thousand get Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. Altogether, over $13 billion was paid out to Nevada families to help them get through the pandemic.

DETR’s other divisions also work tirelessly to support the workforce in our state: Nevada Equal Rights Commission, Vocation Rehabilitation, Governor’s Office of Workforce Innovation, Research and Analysis.

Some of DETR’s accomplishments and upcoming improvements include:

Nevada has been a solid #1 in U.S. annual job growth for the past 7 months and #1 or #2 for the past 14 months.

The Unemployment website will be modernized, which will make it easier for claimants to file claims. The new system will be adaptable and will help speed up claims processing. We expect the main work on modernization of system to take place from mid-2022 through December of 2024.

The Department of Labor recently granted Nevada $2,304,498.94 to make immediate improvements, combat fraud and address accessibility and equity in the state’s existing unemployment system and processes.

DETR partnered with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development to dedicate $1.6 million that will enable Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) to provide training in Panasonic Energy North America’s (PENA) Reno facility. The training offered is designed to fill 400 entry level, advanced-skill operator, and maintenance technicians’ jobs that pay upwards of $32 per hour.

Nevada Vocation Rehabilitation helped 540 people with disabilities to find competitive and integrated employment from 7/1/2021 to 6/30/2022. The agency has made significant strides forward in helping clients despite the impact of the pandemic and has achieved a 31% increase in successful client employment closures over the last state fiscal year.

GOWINN helped all educators that applied for Nevada’s 2022 Teacher Externship program to match with employer hosts. 2022 was the program’s biggest year with 22 teachers matched across three counties. Teachers will complete a 2-4 day job shadow and be compensated financially and with professional development credit. They are required to demonstrate incorporation in lesson plans and direct impact to students.

NERC now offers a “How to File a Complaint” video tutorial on its website. Anyone who is concerned they have been discriminated against can now easily learn how to file cases online. Online applications will also free up time for staff to investigate more cases.
