Weekly Newsletter

This week, I launched the Nevada Climate Series 2022 aimed at bringing awareness to climate change and mitigate the impacts. We kicked it off focusing on wildfire, with a tour of the site of the Pinehaven Fire in Reno and a guide for residents on how to prepare for this wildfire season. You can find that guide here. Wildfire season is getting longer & more intense due to dry, hot conditions – people who have never had to worry about wildfires may be impacted now. That’s why we’ve worked with University of Nevada, Reno’s Living with Fire Program on the Wildfire Preparation Guide to help keep Nevadans safe. We are collaborating with partners across the state to provide resources for Nevadans in the face of climate change – when it comes to wildfires, extreme heat, drought and air quality. Find more information about our efforts: https://climateaction.nv.gov/

I also joined the grand opening of the Nevada Strong Start Child Care Services Center in Reno. It’s a one-stop shop for child care providers and families to find high-quality resources, support and information they need. This center will support families and those working so hard to provide quality child care and early education. I am committed to caring for our youngest Nevadans by working to lower costs for families, support staff and help businesses. Last week, I was proud to announce $50 million for the Nevada Child Care Fund to expand eligibility for qualified families across the state and lower their out-of-pocket costs for child care. Learn more about the program and if you qualify here.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

Starting July 16, compassionate, accessible care will be available to Nevadans statewide by dialing 988, a new, easy to remember three-digit number. My Office has been receiving questions about the launch of this number and what services will be offered.

Q: What is 988?

A: The Nevada Department of Health and Human Services is launching 988, a behavioral health and crisis phone number, to ensure help is available for those in need. 988 will become the national three-digit dialing code for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, replacing the current phone number.

Q: How can people connect with 988?

A: If you or someone you care about is experiencing thoughts of suicide, a mental health crisis, or just needing to talk, you can connect with a trained professional through phone (in multiple languages), text, and chat (English only).

Q: Is 988 only for those experiencing a mental health crisis?

A: No, if you are worried about a loved one who in crisis, you can call 988 to find out how to connect them to the services they need and what you can do to help them. However, if someone has already taken steps towards harming themselves or others, continue to call 911.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Vineburg Machining, Inc.

Image

Tucked away in a business park in Mound House, between Carson City and Dayton is an industrial building you might not notice that houses a company called Vineburg Machining, Inc. (VMI). But look a little closer and you’ll discover an advanced machining shop that has impacted Google Maps and the U.S. Military.

The cameras used to capture images of your neighborhood on Google maps are attached to cars with a mount made by VMI. Critical parts for the M240 machine gun are also produced here. Gerd Poppinga, President of Vineburg Machining, as well as the company’s General Manager Sven Klatt both completed their machining apprenticeships in Germany before immigrating to the United States. That profound training experience left them with a deep interest in workforce and talent development for careers in manufacturing.

Gerd has been a strong supporter of the Governor’s office of Economic Development’s efforts in workforce development which dates to the agency devising the Learn and Earn Advanced career Pathway framework (LEAP) in 2014. The framework’s principles contain a vital employer outreach and feedback component (including the endorsements of courses, credentials, and certificates) and Gerd’s engagement has substantially informed the development of this process. He has also supported the creation of a manufacturing career video which also showcased the opportunities and successes of women and/ or minority talent in this industry. LEAP has undergone an evolution over the last few years informing more and more workforce development initiatives about proven career pathway structures.

The latest GOED initiative is supporting Project SANDI and Gerd plays again a vital role in his capacity of ‘guarantor’ for the development of virtual reality (VR) powered Manufacturing Technician 1 (MT1) national credential. Gerd is also an industry representative member of Nevada Manufacturing Sector Council.

“My passion is workforce development, helping young people find good paying jobs and if it’s in manufacturing to help them advance in their careers,” Poppinga said.

Community partners and providers have a new place to direct Medicaid members to help them avoid a gap in their health insurance. Nevada Medicaid has added resources to the member web page. As a reminder, when the federal Public Health Emergency declaration ends, the continuous coverage requirement will also end. Poultry Owners Urged to Protect Birds from Avian Influenza Virus

Image

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) is reminding owners of poultry flocks and pet birds to practice biosecurity measures and report illnesses. A strain of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) has been detected throughout the U.S., including in Nevada, and can infect poultry (such as chickens, turkeys, pheasants, quail, domestic ducks, geese, and guinea fowl) and wild birds. To mitigate impacts of the disease, it is important that bird owners quarantine and report any sick birds to the USDA at (866) 536-7593 or the NDA state veterinarian Dr. Amy Mitchell. The NDA also recommends the suspension of poultry shows, events and exhibitions to prevent the spread of this highly contagious disease. View the NDA press release to learn more.

Infected poultry will not enter the food system and according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the public health risk associated with these avian influenza detections in birds remains low. As a reminder, the proper handling and cooking of all poultry and eggs to an internal temperature of 165 ˚F is recommended as a general food safety precaution.

For more information on avian influenza and safety measures, visit agri.nv.gov/Animals/Avian.

Nevadans Reminded of COVID-19 Resources

Image

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread at gatherings this summer. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19
  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com

Getting to Know Your State Government

Nevada Department of Transportation

Image

The roads connecting us to our job, healthcare and other destinations, the freight system bringing the everyday goods we rely on, and the pathways and mass transit systems providing additional ways to get around can often be taken for granted. But, with 24 billion vehicle miles traveled every year in Nevada, transportation is critical.

With the goal of keeping Nevada safe and connected, the Nevada Department of Transportation plans, constructs, operates, and maintains the approximately 5,300 miles of highway and more than 1,000 bridges which make up the state highway system.

Across thousands of miles of state highway, NDOT’s more than 700 highway maintenance experts perform nearly 75 different types of highway maintenance tasks to keep highways safe and open for travelers. Meanwhile, transportation planning, design, construction, engineering and administrative staff plan, build and operate Nevada’s transportation network for our growing state.

The department also supports a statewide, multi-modal transportation system through transit, pedestrian, bicycle, rail, aviation and more. Every year, NDOT administers approximately $10 million in Federal Transit Administration funds to support rural public transportation connecting Nevadans to employment, recreation, medical services and more. Through annual safety inspections and education programs, NDOT’s aviation division helps ensure that Nevada's general aviation public and private-use airports provide a safe, viable, and balanced system of aviation facilities.

Highlights:

  •  Nevada bridges have been ranked among the nation’s best for the past eight years.
  • Over the past four years, NDOT has reduced operational GHG emissions by 17 percent through reduced energy and fuel use, as well as recycling highway materials.
  • NDOT brought together partners to develop the Nevada State Rail Plan outlining more than 50 potential rail infrastructure projects to create economic advantages and transportation efficiencies, while Nevada’s Freight Plan was named one of the nation’s top plans to be used as a national model for freight planning.
  • Since 2013, NDOT’s 511 Nevada Travel Info’s NVRoads.com web site has seen more than 13 million visits for Nevada highway information.
  • For more than 15 years, NDOT has provided the Freeway Service Patrol in Las Vegas and Reno to enhance freeway safety and help quickly clear incident scenes. The Freeway Service Patrol responds to more than 55,000 roadside incidents every year, with approximately 80 percent of incidents cleared within fifteen minutes.
