Weekly Newsletter

This week, Kathy and I were honored to host a reception at the Governor’s Mansion for recipients of the Victims of Crime Advocates grant. This grant supports programs that provide direct services to victims of crime. The reception for recipients was just one small way to show our appreciation for the critical work they do and their dedication to helping Nevadans when they need help the most. The pandemic shone a bright light on issues like mental health, domestic abuse and isolation. Non-profits and public agencies across the state had to step up to take in even more crime victims as they saw a surge in calls for help. This funding will support a variety of programs, from child advocacy centers and domestic violence shelters to elderly crime victimization assistance. I can’t thank victim advocates across the state enough for the tireless work they do for Nevadans in crisis every day.

I also had the chance to tour Our Center in Reno this week, northern Nevada’s LGBTQIA+ community center. The team and all of the volunteers have a truly remarkable impact on so many lives, offering a wide variety of services and resources, and ensuring there’s a welcome space for all. During Pride month, we celebrate the contributions the LGBTQIA+ community have made in our great State – but it’s also important to acknowledge the challenges they’ve faced. I’m proud to see people across Nevada continue the fight for equality. I’m dedicated to standing by them in the fight to create a more inclusive, safe society where everyone feels free to express themselves and their love however they choose.

Across Nevada, this weekend we are celebrating both Juneteenth National Freedom Day and Father’s Day. I hope all of you can enjoy the holidays, relax and remember the importance of why we celebrate.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

Q: How will the end of the state COVID-19 emergency declaration affect Medicaid recipients?

A:
The end of Nevada’s COVID-19 emergency does not affect Medicaid eligibility. However, there are very important things that Medicaid recipients should do to prepare for the eventual end of the federal public health emergency.

Notices will be going out in the mail, and if you miss it, you could experience a gap in your Medicaid insurance. To prepare, update your address and go paperless at AccessNevada.dwss.nv.gov (UPI and VRU PIN required). For assistance and to have your questions answered, email Welfare@dwss.nv.gov

You can download the new NV Medicaid App to keep in touch with the latest updates. More details are available here

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Carter Hair Design

Image

Carter Hair Design in Wells is a full-service salon that just moved to 451 6th Street. At our new location, we have added not only the space to create more jobs, but the equipment for new services. Prior to the move it was just owner Mindy Carter in a one-room little studio that offered hair services and basic nail services. Carter Hair Design now offers hair services for the whole family, manicure, acrylic and gel extensions and pedicures with our massaging pedicure chair, full body waxing, spray tans, and eye lash extensions. They have two nail stations, two hair stations, and a private room for waxing and spray tans. Booking online is available at www.Carter-hair-design.com and clients can also call 352-575-4268 or reach out on Facebook or Instagram and stop by for appointments. Carter gives credit for her new location and four team members to assistance she received from a Community Development Block Grant CARES Act grant that was administered by the Nevada Governor’s Office of Economic Development last year. “The Rural Business Assistance Program grant (from CARES funding) has been instrumental in this move with making it possible to get new equipment, securing the new space and providing mentorship through this transition,” Carter said

Resources for Nevadans

The Nevada Department of Transportation Offers Warm Weather Driving Tips, Freeway Service Patrol Helps Quickly Clear Incident Scenes in Las Vegas and Reno

Image

NDOT Freeway Service Patrol vehicles patrol fixed routes, helping keep freeways clear by assisting motorists to remove stalled vehicles, as well as extinguishing minor vehicle fires, providing traffic control and scene safety during incidents and more. NDOT Freeway Service Patrol also provides holiday and special event coverage.

National statistics show that for every minute a freeway lane is blocked, the resulting traffic congestion takes four minutes to clear, and the chance of secondary crashes rises. By helping to quickly and safely clear roadside incidents, the Freeway Service Patrol, sponsored by Geico, helps keep freeways safe.

Warm Weather Driving Tips:

  •  Check tire pressure and tread. As warmer weather arrives, make sure your vehicle tires are properly inflated to manufacturer recommendations, which can also enhance fuel efficiency.
  • Check vehicle lights, including headlights, brake lights, back-up lights, taillights, parking lights and turn signals.
  • Check windshield wipers. Be ready for summer showers by checking and replacing wiper blades if needed.
  • Check vehicle brakes, battery, cables, filters, oil and all other fluid levels, hoses and belts.
  • Pack an extra bottle of drinking water. It can provide hydration and can be used for cooling down an overheated engine, washing hands after any urgent roadside vehicle repairs and more.
  • Be familiar with your vehicle’s spare tire and tire repair accessories. Some new vehicles no longer come with a spare tire as standard equipment.
  • Share the road. Warmer weather brings more motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians to Nevada roads. Everyone should watch out for each other.

The Nevada Health Response wants to remind Nevadans to take steps to help reduce the risk of COVID-19 and prevent spread at gatherings this summer. COVID-19 vaccines and booster doses are available in locations statewide and can protect against serious infection. Pre-exposure medication or oral antivirals and monoclonal antibody treatments are available to those that are eligible soon after infection occurs.

Resources available to help Nevadans mitigate the risk of COVID-19
  • Get vaccinated against COVID-19. Learn about the vaccines available, and where and how to get your vaccination appointment at NVCOVIDFighter.com or call the vaccine hotline at 800-401-0946.
  • Learn about therapeutics. COVID-19 treatment appointments can be made through Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946. The hotline can help determine if you are eligible for oral antivirals or monoclonal antibody treatments after infection or for pre-exposure medication to increase immune response if you were to be infected in the future. The pre-screening can also be done online at NevadaCOVIDTreatment.com
