News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

It’s #NationalDairyMonth and no state understands the importance of dairy better than Minnesota!

That’s because our state’s dairy industry includes nearly 500,000 cows and is one of the largest livestock sectors in the state. We are also home to 3,470 dairy farms, which are responsible for nearly 9,500 jobs. Each year Minnesota dairy farmers produce nearly 10 billion pounds of milk!

I am honored to represent the largest dairy producing county in the state of Minnesota: Stearns County. Our dairy farmers are some of the hardest working folks in the country and currently, we are failing them. Read on to learn about how I’m working for dairy farmers in Minnesota.

2018 Farm Bill

There’s no way around it: Congress let farmers down when we failed to pass the Farm Bill a few weeks ago. The good news is that this week, the House may have another chance to step up and stand alongside our agriculture community. A second vote on the 2018 Farm Bill could come as early as Friday.

I will continue to support this package because it includes provisions that serve the farmers of Minnesota. With better dairy risk management tools, a strong crop insurance program, and an improved Agricultural Risk Coverage Program, we can eliminate some of the stress our farmers face.

Back in March, I introduced the Stemming the Tide of Rural Economic Stress and Suicide (STRESS Act) which will reauthorize the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN) and give states needed resources to provide mental health services for farmers and ranchers.

I’m proud to report that both chambers and both parties agree that the STRESS Act should become law. The STRESS Act is included in the House’s Farm Bill and last week, the Senate included the same language of the STRESS Act in their Farm Bill.
