Weekly Newsletter

This week, I’m honored I was able to join federal, state and community stakeholders for major announcements and events that will help Nevadans in all corners of our State.

This week, I joined the Latin Chamber of Commerce and Nevada Donor Network as they launched a new campaign called “Corazon de Esperanza,” translating to “Heart of Hope.” The statewide campaign is geared toward educating and encouraging Latino residents and other populations about becoming organ, eye and tissue donors to help save lives. With nearly 600 Nevadans waiting for a lifesaving transplant, we can all do our part to bring hope to those waiting. I’m proud to support this effort to help end the wait for Nevadans. For more information about the campaign, you can click here. For the Spanish version page, click here.

I was excited to go to the Dollar Loan Center this week as well, to announce the Indoor Football League National Championship Games will be held at the Dollar Loan Center for the next three years. I joined the IFL Commissioner Todd Tryon, Dollar Loan Center Founder & CEO Chuck Brennan, City of Henderson Councilman Dan Stewart and the announcer for the Vegas Golden Knights, Daren Millard for the announcement. This is a huge win for our community and for the IFL. These events bring visitors to our State, boosting our economy and help keep Nevadans employed. We are truly the Sports Capital of the World!

On Wednesday, I also had a great discussion with high school student body presidents from across Las Vegas at Durango High School. The students told me about their plans for the upcoming school year, what the pandemic has been like for students, and mental health issues in schools. Nearly 20 incoming and outgoing student body presidents and student reporters came together and shared ideas and solutions to issues at their schools, and what they learned after leading their peers through an unprecedented time during the pandemic. These students are our future. I’m so glad I got the chance to sit down with them and learn what the State can do to help all students succeed going into the next school year.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Answering Nevada's Questions

Q: Nevadans have reached out to my office looking for information related to evictions proceedings. What resources are available for Nevadans?

A: We believe all Nevadans deserve a home, and last year I signed pieces of legislation that help protect the rights of those facing evictions. Rental assistance is still available statewide, and Nevadans can learn more about rental assistance at https://housing.nv.gov/Resources/COVID-19/Renter_Assistance/.

Have a Question About Your Small Business? Come to the Office of Small Business Advocacy

Launched earlier this year, the Office of Small Business Advocacy (OSBA) in the Lieutenant Governor’s office is a one-stop shop for Nevada’s small businesses. Small businesses make up 99% of all businesses in our state, and many have under 100 employees. The OSBA knows that small businesses often don’t have an attorney or HR representative on staff, and navigating the processes of state government can be daunting. Director Sonny Vinuya, based in Las Vegas, and Program Manager Melissa Saavedra, based in Carson City, are ready to help find the correct permit, locate the proper aid, and even find funding, if available. If you have a question about your small business, the OSBA is where you can find answers.

More information and the form to file claims for assistance are available at the OSBA website.

Federal Program Helps Connect More Nevadans to Low-Cost High-Speed Internet

    Image

On May 9, the White House announced a federal program to help connect more Nevadans to low-cost high-speed internet access. 20 internet providers from across the country have committed to help reduce costs for consumers while increasing internet speeds, with the Affordable Connectivity Program.

“I’m proud of the work from the White House, with support from Nevada’s federal delegation, to increase internet access,” said Gov. Sisolak. “This initiative aligns with the work we are doing here in Nevada to bring high-speed access to every community.”

The federal program highlighted today creates the Affordable Connectivity Program, which allows tens of millions of American households to reduce their internet service costs by up to $30/month. Nevadans who may be eligible can learn more about the program at http://www.getinternet.gov/

Prepare Now for Potential Smoke Impacts from Wildfires

         Image

Climate change is being felt in and around Nevada, with record-breaking temperatures and extreme drought fueling catastrophic wildfires across the west. Last summer, Northern Nevada experienced the worst air quality on record due to thick smoke from the massive California fires. With wildfire season now underway, the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) is urging communities to plan in advance to minimize exposure to potential air quality impacts from wildfire smoke by following these guidelines:

  • If any family member has heart or lung disease, including asthma, check with your doctor about what you should do to protect yourself from wildfire smoke. Have a plan to manage your condition.
  • Stock up so you don’t have to go out when it’s smoky. Buy groceries that do not need to be refrigerated or cooked because cooking can add to indoor air pollution.
  • Create a “clean room” in your home and include a portable air cleaner. Choose a room with no fireplace and as few windows and doors as possible. Make sure the portable air cleaner has high efficiency HEPA filters and it is the right size for the room.
  • Know how you will get air quality alerts and health warnings in your area, such as through public service announcements, social media, and AirNow.gov.
  • To supplement information from AirNow.gov, consider purchasing a low-cost air quality sensor to monitor air quality inside and outside your home. Follow all manufacturer guidelines to improve accuracy. Learn more by clicking here.

New Medicaid & Welfare Employer Outreach

For the first time, Nevada Medicaid and the Division of Welfare and Supportive Services are asking employers to help reach Medicaid members with important messages. DWSS Workforce Development and Nevada Medicaid developed communication catered to employees and employers including emails and flyers for distribution and posting in break areas. One flyer is available regarding methods for updating addresses and going paperless. Another flyer is available to help promote the new NV Medicaid App and email list. Both flyers are available in Spanish as well. Human Resources within the State of Nevada can also post the flyers in lunch rooms.
