Weekly Newsletter

This week, I am so excited to welcome you to a newly updated newsletter!
In this issue, you’ll find resources from agencies, our ongoing Small Business Spotlight and more about what our Nevada agencies do in a new section we’re calling “Getting to Know Your State Government”!

This week, I got to visit Nevadans across the State, hear about different resources available and say thank you to many for their services they provide to communities.

I joined a group of folks at Beverly S. Mathis Elementary School as music teacher Ali Jun was awarded a $25,000 from the Milken Family Foundation to celebrate her success and achievement as a teacher. I am so grateful for all our teachers, and even as we come to the end of Teacher Appreciation Week in Nevada, I urge all of us to continue to show our support for our hard-working and fantastic educators.

Wednesday, the State held a Small Business Resource Fair at the West Sahara Library in Las Vegas. More than 50 government and non-profit exhibitors offered free resources and information to small business owners. These small businesses are what makes Nevada so special and keeps our economy strong.

Later in the week, I joined Nevada’s 2022 Wildland Fire Briefing in Northern Nevada alongside dozens of fire response and natural resource officials to discuss what needs to be done to protect Nevada from wildfires and the impacts. Most fires are caused by people, and I want to emphasize that everyone has a role in protecting Nevada from wildfire destruction. Learn more how to prepare for wildfire, air quality issues and extreme heat impacts by following these guidelines

Finally, I was honored to pay tribute to fallen law enforcement officers at the Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and the Peace Officer Memorial in Northern Nevada. We pay tribute to the officers who laid down their life for our safety, and thank the officers who put their lives on the line every day to protect us.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: The Juniper Booth

      Image

The Juniper Booth is a modern photobooth that is the perfect place for your next event. Owner Sarah Hults has taken an old horse trailer that belonged to a local farmer, gutted all the interior dividers and rubber wall mats, cleaned it up and given it a fresh coat of white paint and has ship lapped the interior for a modern fresh feel. “I feel they are so popular because it’s an activity that gives guests a chance to socialize and be silly,” said Hults. “Adding the photobooth to my business will help because it’s a unique option that can take an event to the next level and clients can be offered a whole package to simplify their planning.”

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Q: Nevadans have reached out to my office looking for resources if they test positive for COVID-19. What treatment is available and where can we find more information?

A: In Nevada, free treatment may be available for those that test positive for COVID-19. When an individual tests positive for COVID-19, they are encouraged to call Nevada’s hotline at 800-401-0946 to make a telehealth appointment and get information on free COVID-19 treatment.

Paxlovid is an oral antiviral medication that has been shown to reduce hospitalization and death. Early use of Paxlovid has been shown to reduce the risk of severe disease and death in high-risk patients by up to 89%. Another resource is Evusheld, which offers preventative protection from COVID-19 and is recommended for those who are immunocompromised or not recommended to receive a vaccine.

Clark County Calls for New Foster Parents for Infants

           Image

A high number of infants are entering the Clark County foster care system, so County leaders are asking residents to consider opening their hearts and their homes for our youngest foster children.

So far this year, 467 children under the age of 1 have come into the County’s foster care system, which is well above the pace from recent years. There are more than 3,400 children in the County’s foster care system on any given day. The ultimate goal is to reunite children with their birth parents, however, that can sometimes take a long time.

Becoming a foster parent requires special training, background checks and home inspections, which can take several months to complete. By recruiting residents to begin the process of becoming foster parents now, there will be more foster homes ready for infants available later this year should the current trends continue.

Governor Sisolak declared May as Foster Care Month in Nevada, encouraging more families to consider becoming fosters, and thanking all the families that have already opened their doors to children in the foster care system. Read the entire proclamation here

The County Department of Family Services actively recruits foster parents for children ranging in age from newborn to 17. Anyone interested in becoming a foster parent is encouraged to visit ClarkCountyFosterCare.com, email Countmein@ClarkCountyNV.gov, or call (702) 455-0181.
