Weekly Newsletter

This week, I am excited to share some exciting change you’ll begin to see in the newsletter next week. Since we launched this weekly newsletter; we’ve been working to keep Nevadans updated with the latest news on what State agencies are doing – as well as efforts being made across the State in the last two years to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. Our newsletter is undergoing a makeover next week to help you, our constituents, even more.

Every week, we will be answering a question from a Nevadan on a pressing issue they’re having, in hopes it can help some of you as well. We will also be sharing resources from agencies across the State to help connect you to the resources you need. We are going to keep highlighting Nevada small businesses because small businesses are the backbone of our economy.

This is an exciting change – and we can’t wait to better connect you to resources and important news happening in Nevada!

Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

Governor Sisolak Kicks Off NFL Draft Weekend in Las Vegas

    Image   Image

It’s official – we are the entertainment AND sports capital of the world. Thursday, I celebrated the launch of the NFL Draft in Nevada at Caesars Palace, as fans and the NFL began to take over the Strip. I was excited to proclaim April 28th – 30th in honor of the NFL Draft in Las Vegas.

I’m beyond proud Las Vegas is the first city ever to secure the Draft, Super Bowl and Pro Bowl. I know our visitors will find there is no experience that compares to a professional sporting event in Vegas – and I know fans will be begging for these events to come back to Nevada.

Bringing more sporting events to Nevada is one of my biggest priorities – and it’s not just because I like a good game. These events keep our economy humming – by filling hotel rooms, keeping our restaurants full and creating good-paying jobs. 50% of our visitors will either add or extend a trip because of sporting events. That’s an estimated 23 million people spending more money.

There’s nowhere else in the world you can build a Draft stage like this one – over the iconic Bellagio fountains. Nobody can do it like Nevada!

Governor Sisolak Tours Palms Casino Resort Ahead of Grand Reopening

    Image   Image

On Wednesday, I got to tour Palms Casino Resort ahead of its grand reopening after shutting down in March 2020 due to COVID-19. It’s coming back with some new features and new ownership, but still has many of the things we loved about the original resort! Palms is now the first Las Vegas property to be owned and operated by a Native American Tribe. It’s run by the San Manuel Gaming and HospAuthority, under the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.

Palms received over 20,000 job applications ahead of reopening, and among its 1,400+ team members, half are former workers returning, and 78 are “Day One” employees. As we round the corner on recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s great to see the team at Palms celebrate this reopening after two years and bring life back to the area just west of the Las Vegas Strip.

Governor Sisolak Joins Nevada Conservation League to Celebrate Earth Day 2022

  Image Image

On April 22nd, I joined the Nevada Conservation League, alongside State Assemblywoman Rochelle Nguyen, Chispa NV, Get Outdoors Nevada and others to talk about Earth Day 2022. We all have a unique responsibility to protect our beautiful Silver State, and I am proud to be a partner in this effort.

This year’s theme was “Invest In Our Planet,” and I’m proud of the man steps we’ve taken to invest in a green & prosperous future for Nevada. Last year, Nevada adopted clean car standards, offering consumers more opportunities to drive a low or no emission vehicle. Less than a month ago, Nevada joined 16 other states, the District of Columbia and Quebec to get more zero emission, medium- and heavy-duty vehicles on our roads. These efforts won’t just help the climate, they also help improve air quality for all, especially the most vulnerable among us.

That's just one example of the steps we’ve taken – but we can and must do more across all sectors and levels of government to fight climate change. We owe it to the next generation to reduce our emissions and take action that will protect our communities and our natural resources from climate change, and this effort is going to take all of us.

Governor Sisolak Honors Veterans, Volunteers at the Veteran of the Month and Veteran Supporter of the Month Ceremony

     Image      Image

Wednesday, I was honored to recognize and thank Veterans of the Month and Veteran Supporters of the Month during a special ceremony, for the tremendous work they do for veterans across the Silver State. I was thrilled to pay tribute to Bill Baumann – there are few in Nevada who have done more for veterans in our State than him. We are truly appreciative for the years he has devoted to our State and to our veterans and their families. Whether it was making sure veterans had specially made motorized wheelchairs, or working with State lawmakers to highlight the needs of Nevada’s veterans – Bill Baumann has had a tremendous impact.

This ceremony gives us the opportunity to keep a focus on veterans, as well as the needs of veterans the veterans’ community. The work of all these volunteers serves as an inspiration for others, young and old, to follow.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Lotspeich Family Farm

Image

Lotspeich Family Farm has been serving northeast Nevadans for five generations, based out of Deet, Nevada. With generations of handed down knowledge and tried and tested practices, they’ve come into their stride with growing high quality nutritious produce, beautiful flowers and healthy lamb on the farm. Being situated in such a harsh region has meant they are consistently innovating and developing the best methods for growing in Elko County.

Committed to serving local families and communities through sustainable agriculture, Lotspeich Family Farm sells their produce and goods first-hand at local farmers markets. “We love being able to meet and interact with our customers each week. We’re now partnering with loved and trusted local businesses in Elko to ensure more people get to enjoy our quality products, in their homes and kitchens as well as in local restaurants.” For more information, click here

Leslie Lotspeich, 4th generation farmer, was selected for the 2022 Nevada Women’s Farm2Food Accelerator program through the Nevada Department of Agriculture. The business accelerator program focuses on helping women farmers launch or grow a food or beverage product by providing education and training, peer networking and consultations with entrepreneurs and food experts. Leslie is focusing on fine tuning a herb seasoning salt for vegetables and meat. When asked how the Farm2Food Accelerator could help her business Leslie responded, “We currently sell produce five months of the year. I want to be able to market my salts online direct to consumers 12 months of the year to enhance my business.”

If you’re in Elko County over the summer months, be sure to stop by the Elko Farmers Market to find fruits, vegetables, greens and herbs coming from the Lotspeich Family Farm.

Five Renewable Energy Projects Approved for Tax Abatements Will Invest $1.5B in Nevada’s Economy and Add 1,166 Megawatts to Renewable Energy Capacity

Image

Last year, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy (GOE) approved partial sales and use tax and partial property tax abatements to five renewable energy companies. Under GOE’s Renewable Energy Tax Abatement (RETA) program, these five companies will invest an anticipated $1,583,145,370 to Nevada’s economy through sales tax, property tax and payroll. In addition, these projects will create an estimated 853 construction jobs and 29 permanent jobs in Nevada and add 1,166 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy capacity to Nevada’s existing capacity of just under 5,000 MW.

In addition, two previously approved projects began construction in 2021: Fish Springs Solar and Yellow Pine Solar. So far in 2022, one additional project has been approved for abatements (Arrow Canyon Solar) and one new project has applied (Iron Point Solar). The large investments this tax abatement program brings into the state is an investment in both our clean energy future and more jobs for more Nevadans. Learn more about the approved projects and GOE’s RETA program here

Discover Nevada Under the Stars

Image

This week marks International Dark Sky Week, a global movement to recognize places and communities that work to limit “light pollution” from urban areas, streetlights, and the built environment. Along with hindering stargazers from enjoying the night skies, bright or unshielded lights can drive up energy costs and harm native ecosystems and wildlife species.

The Nevada Division of Outdoor Recreation (NDOR) is working to protect our pristine dark skies. On Tuesday, May 3, NDOR will be hosting a public workshop on regulations related to Senate Bill 52, which Governor Sisolak signed in 2021 to recognize sites in Nevada that have earned a dark sky designation. Click the link to learn how you can attend the workshop in-person or virtually.

You can also celebrate Dark Sky Week by exploring the Starry-est Route in America! NDOR and Nevada State Parks are proud to be a project partner for Park to Park in the Dark, an astro-tourism route that connects Death Valley and Great Basin National Parks. This route gives people a chance to see some of the least light-polluted places in the country, as well as enjoy other great outdoor recreation opportunities along the way.
