Weekly Newsletter

In the last two weeks, we've made such tremendous progress for Nevadans in critical priority areas. Last week, we formally launched the Home Means Nevada affordable housing initiative and this week, we hosted our first-ever Healthcare Provider Summit focused on how we make healthcare more affordable and accessible to all Nevadans.

In the last decade, more than 400,000 people have moved into Nevada. In that same amount of time, the median price of a single-family home in our state has risen two-fold – to over $450,000 dollars. This is an immensely complex issue and it's critical that we move with urgency. The $500 million Home Means Nevada initiative is the single largest investment in housing in our state’s history and builds upon incredible investments we’ve already made in the past 3 years.

The pandemic has shown us how important equitable and accessible health care is, that’s why I was glad to convene more than 700 folks at the Las Vegas Convention Center this week to talk about access, equity and to announce my plans to make a $20 million investment of American Rescue Plan Act funds for Nevada’s Crisis Stabilization Centers. This funding will be transformational for our State, and I am grateful we can show our commitment to establishing the most essential components of community-based crisis care.

I want to thank all the partners who have helped make both these initiatives possible, and I look forward to continued work on behalf of Nevadans,

Steve Sisolak

Governor Sisolak Tours SafeNest, a Non-Profit Awarded a $100,000 Community Recovery Grant

Image

What an honor to tour SafeNest last week after the non-profit was awarded a $100,000 Community Recovery Grant. SafeNest is using the funds to supplement their counseling services that they can provide to victims of domestic and sexual assault.

SafeNest provides group counseling and individual therapy for adult & youth victims of domestic violence, adolescent victims of dating violence, and those who have witnessed violence to assist them in trauma recovery and to learn positive relationship skills.

I am so glad this funding will help retain more licensed therapist hours to fill this gap in one-on-one counseling and conduct drop-in support groups to help clients engage in counseling without delay to begin the healing process.

Governor Sisolak Visits Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada to Discuss Community Recovery Grant and Vegas Strong Resiliency Center

   Image   Image

Thank you to the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada for having me this week to discuss the $2.6 million the non-profit from the Community Recovery Grant to continue the vital work it’s doing to serve Nevadans. Legal Aid Center does critical work in the community – whether it’s to help tenants learn their rights or help families with education advocacy. This new funding will help them address pandemic educational deficiencies for vulnerable youth with disabilities.

I also got the chance to see where the new Vegas Strong Resiliency Center will be located. The center, which has helped countless people impacted by the October 1st tragedy, is now expanding to help all victims of crime in the community.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Desert Moon Farms

Image

Desert Moon Farms is a hyper-local, minority, and woman-owned business located in Las Vegas, NV. Inspired by the ways mushrooms can benefit the world- a small scale experiment in a spare bedroom quickly grew into a vision to offer fresh, farm-to-table mushrooms to the Las Vegas community. In a small, tightly packed warehouse in the shadow of the Tropicana casino, owner’s EvaSara Luna and Enrique Gonzalez are perfecting the delicate science of cultivating rare gourmet mushrooms.

Growing mushrooms in the desert is challenging. They require a careful balance of nutrients, cold temperatures, high humidity, low CO2 levels, cleanroom-like sterility, light, and love. Desert Moon’s mushrooms start their cultivation cycle as Mycelium on a Petri dish. The spores are then expanded and transferred to organic bags of oak sawdust, soybean hulls, grains, and filtered water. That’s what the mushrooms devour until they are triggered to grow by transferring the bags to specialized fruiting rooms where they continue to grow until harvested and make their way to your dinner table. In addition to offering delicious, gourmet mushrooms to customers, they also offer grow kits for those interested in growing their own mushrooms right on their countertop. Click here to see the mushroom varieties grown and where to find Desert Moon mushrooms in restaurants or at local farmers markets.

EvaSara was selected for the 2022 Nevada Women’s Farm2Food Accelerator program through the Nevada Department of Agriculture. The business accelerator program focuses on helping women farmers launch or grow a food or beverage product by providing education, training, peer networking, and consultations with entrepreneurs and food experts. When asked how the Farm2Food Accelerator is helping her business goals of expanding her mushroom jerky product, EvaSara responded, “The Farm2Food Accelerator program has done exactly what it has aimed to do, it gathered all the resources I didn’t even know existed and developed a logical curriculum that is helping me refine our product, skip the costly trial and error, and ultimately accelerate the pace at which we can offer a high quality mushroom.”

Come see our Smog Spotter booth at Earth Day 2022 in downtown Summerlin, April 22-23, and at Idlewild Park in Reno on April 24!
