Weekly Newsletter

This week, I was honored to join Amazon Web Services and the Governor's Office of Workforce Innovation at the College of Southern Nevada to announce a new cloud computing program in the State. This new collaboration will allow us to train, upskill and certify 2,500 Nevadans in cloud computing in the next three years by providing access to cloud computing education courses and certifications through higher education and high schools across Nevada.

Cloud computing jobs are in high demand across the United States. In Nevada, Economic Modeling Specialist International (EMSI) has identified 9,601 unfilled cloud computing jobs in 2021, along with over 61,700 cloud computing job postings from Jan. 2021-Dec. 2021. According to LinkedIn, cloud computing has remained one of the most in-demand hard skills for the last several years, and two AWS Certifications appear on the top 10 highest paying certifications list by Global Knowledge (2020).

This program will provide a meaningful opportunity for so many Nevadans and it was great to see so many partners come together in support of the program. Learn more by clicking here.

Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

Governor Sisolak Joins Nevada State Police, Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, Nevada Donor Network, and Others to Launch “You Don’t Have to Wear a Badge to be a Hero” Campaign

         Image

What an honor to join Nevada State Police, Clark County Commissioner Michael Naft, Nevada Donor Network, and so many others to launch a new education campaign. This April, you don’t have to wear a badge to be a hero. We encourage Nevadans to register to be organ donors and to be a hero to fellow Nevadans.

I am a registered organ donor and I know many members of my staff are as well. Nearly 600 Nevadans are waiting for their second chance at life. That’s part of 100,000 Americans across the nation.

With the support and backing of law enforcement and emergency medical service agencies statewide this campaign will help make a difference in the lives of so many across our great State.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Perigo Hay & Cattle

Image

Jess Trask started working for her family's ranch in Lund, Nevada, in 2015.  Her parents were hay farmers by trade, and after the market crashed in 2009, they bought their first cattle. New to the industry, Jess found her passion in raising cattle. She is even working on getting her masters through the University of Nebraska - Online, in Cattle Nutrition.

In 2019, Jess wanted to connect people to where their food comes from and began utilizing social media to show her daily activities and share knowledge. In 2020, Jess started selling beef from their ranch directly to consumers. She cares tremendously about the animals she raises and is even BeefCARE Certified- a sustainability standard that pillars on animal husbandry, environmental stewardship, and community involvement. Every year, the crew at Perigo Hay & Cattle figure out new ways to be more sustainable, whether it be to install green energy or use manure from their cows to spread as fertilizer on their cropland. Perigo Beef ships its products across the nation using recycled material. Jess delivers all her local orders for White Pine County every Wednesday in an insulated, reusable tote.

Being a young, female rancher is not something that she takes lightly. She has become an advocate for all young women to follow their passion in life, whatever that may look like. Part of the calves the Perigo's raise are sold to Walmart under their high quality "McClaren Farms" label, only found at Walmart's in the southeastern United States, for now. In 2021, Jess was featured in their commercial showing real ranchers who raise their beef. In 2022, Jess was asked to attend Walmart's Year Beginning Meeting in Houston to talk with executives and store managers about what ranching in the 21st century looks like and tell her story.

Jess works tirelessly to continue to make improvements to their ranch and grow their brand. There is talk of a "Perigo Corner Market" brick and mortar store in the works for 2023.

If you want some quality beef that's verified natural and certified Angus, check out their Facebook page here. You can learn more about her and her family's ranch on the "features" tab of the same website. You can also follow them on Instagram at @perigohaycattle.

Nevada’s Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) Website Ranked Number 1 in Nation in Transparency Image

Nevada’s Governor’s Office of Economic Development (GOED) website has been ranked as the most transparent of all state economic development websites in the nation by watchdog group Good Jobs First.

“Transparency has been a key priority since I was appointed to this post by Governor Sisolak,” said Michael Brown, GOED Executive Director. “The team at GOED has done a superb job of enhancing transparency. We will use this report to guide continuous improvement.”

Since January of 2019, the GOED has approved abatements for 80 companies. Within five years, these companies will add 11,727 jobs and make $2.1 billion in capital investment in the State of Nevada. Over the next ten years, these companies will generate more than $1.1 billion in new net tax revenues for our state.

Most states rate poorly on giving advance notice of proposed deals, and only 4% of the 250 programs rated post the full incentive details ahead of a public hearing so that residents can knowledgeably oppose, support or suggest improvements to them.  The study, entitled Financial Exposure: Rating the States on Economic Development Transparency, can be found here.

NDOT and traffic safety partners across the state remind motorists to drive safely in road work zones, including during National Work Zone Awareness Week held April 11-15.

Meningitis Vaccine Required for Incoming 12th Graders

Image

Effective July 1, 2022, students enrolled in the 12th grade throughout Nevada will be required to receive the meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the start of the 2022-23 school year. The MenACWY vaccine is an immunization against meningitis.

The requirement, approved by the State Board of Health, is for all public, private, and charter schools in Nevada. For most students this means a booster dose as they likely received a first dose of MenACWY at ages 11-12. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends a single dose of MenACWY at ages 11-12 followed by a booster dose administered at 16 years of age.

Vaccines are available through primary care providers, pharmacies, health districts, and Federally Qualified Health Centers throughout Nevada. For more information or to find a vaccine clinic, click here.
