News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

Tax season is upon us once again.

To help you or someone you know navigate tax season, we’ve put together a Taxpayer Toolkit with resources to help get you through.

Thanks to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act we passed last year, and the President signed, Minnesotans are already starting to see bigger paychecks

In fact, to date, more than 4 million Americans have already received a tax cut bonus or a pay raise.

That’s because businesses know our old broken tax code is on its way out and want to pass on the relief they will receive to you, the employee and to the consumer.

Click here to see a running list of businesses who have given out bonuses, pay raises, and more to their employees.

And we're just getting started.

Remember, my office can help with any federal agency, including the IRS. Contact caseworkers in my Ostego office at any time if you need assistance at 763-241-6848 and write to me here.

Sincerely,

P.S. How have tax cuts helped you and your family? Share your story with me here

Will the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act change my taxes this year?

Many of the changes made by The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will not take effect until you file your 2018 tax returns in April 2019. However, there are a few exceptions. For example, the ability to deduct high medical expenses from returns is retroactive for this tax season. Taxpayers are able to write off health care spending that exceeds 7.5 percent of their income

Wondering What to Expect for Refunds in 2018?

Visit the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) information page here to learn more. The IRS manages to issue 9 out of 10 refunds in less than 21 days, but if you are waiting longer, be sure to contact your local IRS office (click here). I also have caseworkers located in my district office in Otsego who are always willing to assist you with issues you may be experiencing with federal agencies. Contact them here for assistance.

Next Step: Making Tax Cuts Permanent

The success of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act for individual Americans, their families and this economy has been incredible. That’s why I want to make these cuts permanent.

Soon Congress will take up a bill to do just that.

The Permanent Tax Cuts for Americans Act (H.R. 4886) would make permanent the tax provisions for individuals and pass-through entities in the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, including:

  • Lower rates ensure individuals at every income level will see a tax cut.
  • In Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District, the average four person household will receive a $2,702 tax cut.
  •  Doubles the standard deduction to $12,000/$24,000.
  •  Doubles the Child Tax Credit to $2,000 with up to $1,400 refundable.
  • Retains popular deductions like mortgage interest (capped at $750,000 for new homes), state and local taxes (SALT) (capped at $10,000), medical expenses, and charitable deductions.
  • Simplifies so nearly 90% of Americans will be able to file their taxes on a postcard
  • A first ever 20% tax deduction for small business owners who are the backbone of Main Street America.

I look forward to the House taking up H.R. 4886 soon.
