Weekly Newsletter

This week, I was honored to stand alongside other leaders in Southern Nevada to announce that Las Vegas will play host to a 2023 Formula One race. This is major economic news for our State and has been years in the making. There is no doubt in my mind that Nevada is both the entertainment AND sports capital of the world.

In my role as Governor, I'm looking out for our economy - a thriving economy is good for Nevada workers. Half of the people who visit Las Vegas extend their visit to be part of a sporting event. That’s 23 million people spending more time here, spending more money in our city.  We are expecting 170,000 people to occupy 400,000 room nights, on top of 90 million people watching worldwide.

I can't wait to see what this brings, and I won't stop working on behalf of Nevadans to bring more events and opportunities to the Silver State.

Thank you,
Governor Sisolak

What an honor to visit the LGBTQ Center of Southern Nevada (The Center) in Las Vegas this week. The Center does incredible work on behalf of the LGBTQ community, and I was honored to see their facility and hear about their plans for the future.

To our trans family: we see you, we support you and we celebrate you! Please know that I’m committed to protecting you and ensuring you live life as your true, authentic self in the Silver State.

Governor Sisolak Visits the Western Nevada College Child Development Center

        Image

Investing in childcare is a key priority for me. Nevadans deserve to go to work and know that their children are safe and have every opportunity to succeed. Last week, I visited the Western Nevada College Child Development Center to see some of our work in action. What a warm welcome!

The Child Development Center has received four-star recognition from the Nevada Silver State Stars: Quality Rating Improvement System. Not only does this program care for children in Carson City, but it helps train the next generation of childcare workers.

We’ve already invested over $200 million in childcare providers to help keep operations running during the pandemic and my State of the State, I announced an additional $160 million investment to help double the number of families we can serve across the State.

Western Nevada College’s facility has used federal funds to help reduce the cost of their services - which helps families save money. This is encouraging to see, and a model for us to look at to help even more Nevada families.

I met with Colonel Brett Compston from the Nevada National Guard in my office after his promotion ceremony last week. Colonel Compston is a dedicated and steadfast leader and was critical in our Covid-19 response. It was great to catch up with him in person.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: Fisk Herb Farm

Image

The Fisk Farm is a mini-farm located on the Carson River in Fallon, Nevada.  At just over one acre, owners Stacy and Brad Fisk grow over 75 varieties of herbs. In addition to the herbary, the farm has an 8-hive apiary, a cottage apothecary, and plans to include a future orchard. The farm sells a variety of products including seedlings, roots, rhizomes, honey, fresh-cut and dried herbs, and apothecary products.

Farmer Stacy Fisk welcomes visitors to the farm to “see for yourself how we grow and care for our plants and our precious Mother Earth.” “Our farming practices are based on permaculture principles, and we embrace permaculture ethics: Earth Care, People Care, and Fair Share. Our commitment to permaculture practices naturally moves us “beyond organic.”

In 2022, Fisk is expanding their market garden vegetable beds to support a local community-supported agriculture (CSA) basket in collaboration with two Fallon female farmers, Jaime Sammons of Two Ravens Farm and Korena Mewaldt of Mewaldt Organics. Click here to view scheduled events where you can find Fisk Farm Herbs products or shop online. If you’re traveling through the Fallon area, be sure to stop by Great Basin Apothecary or Herbal Cooperative to purchase Fisk’s dried bulk herbs and honey.

Stacy Fisk was selected for the 2022 Nevada Women’s Farm2Food Accelerator program through the Nevada Department of Agriculture.  The business accelerator program focuses on helping women farmers launch or grow food or beverage products by providing education and training, peer networking and consultations with entrepreneurs and food experts. When asked how the Farm2Food Accelerator could help her business goals of expanding her dried culinary herb offerings Stacy responded, “I am currently in transition, going from the preliminary development stage and selling directly on a small scale at markets, to fine-tuning my system, branding, and marketing to sell my products retail. I expect to take what I learn and apply it to my business planning and expansion, and hopefully, identify and avoid common mistakes.”

As the weather warms in the coming months, insects and pests are more likely to find their way inside of homes. Do you have a pest control strategy? The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) would like to remind Nevadans that pest control operators must be licensed through the NDA to perform treatments, as the misuse of pesticides can have critical consequences for the user, the public, and the environment.  To protect your family, pets, and home, visit the Nevada Department of Agriculture's list of licensed pest companies by clicking here

Nevada’s First-Ever Food Waste Awareness Month this April

Image

The Nevada Division of Environmental Protection (NDEP) and local partners are excited to kick off Nevada's first-ever Food Waste Awareness Month this April. Throughout the month, NDEP and partner organizations will host a series of events and community outreach activities focused on best practices for buying, storing, and composting food to protect the environment while helping to reduce grocery costs for Nevada families. Food waste is the number one source of household waste that makes its way into Nevada’s landfills. This rotting food releases methane - a harmful greenhouse gas emission - that impacts our air quality. Taking simple steps to reduce food waste can add up to big improvements for our environment and maintain Nevada’s leadership in creating clean, healthy, and vibrant communities.

Meningitis Vaccine Required for Incoming 12th Graders

Image

Effective July 1, 2022, students enrolled in the 12th grade throughout Nevada will be required to receive the meningococcal vaccine (MenACWY) prior to the start of the 2022-23 school year. The MenACWY vaccine is an immunization against meningitis.

The requirement, approved by the State Board of Health, is for all public, private, and charter schools in Nevada. For most students this means a booster dose as they likely received a first dose of MenACWY at ages 11-12. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices recommends a single dose of MenACWY at ages 11-12 followed by a booster dose administered at 16 years of age.

Vaccines are available through primary care providers, pharmacies, health districts, and Federally Qualified Health Centers throughout Nevada. For more information or to find a vaccine clinic, click here.
