Weekly Newsletter

This week, I had the distinct honor of welcoming the First Lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden to the great Silver State to talk about job training and workforce development at Truckee Meadows Community College in Reno.

Community colleges like Truckee Meadows are critical in building Nevada's workforce and economic future.

In Nevada, we have worked hard to create new career and technical training opportunities for those looking for retraining. We have expanded STEM education and apprenticeship programs with more than 30,000 students completing training since I took office.

We have created new opportunities for more than 10,000 high school students to begin earning their associate degrees while finishing high school. A high school education isn’t enough, and our students need more skills, training, and certificates to succeed.

As long as we continue to invest in the people of Nevada and in developing our workforce, we will continue to move towards a brighter future!

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak Joins Mayor Goodman and Mayor Schieve to Announce the Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s Launch of Two Small Business Startup Accelerators in Las Vegas and Reno

 Image

This week, I was proud to join Mayor Goodman and Mayor Schieve as we announced the Governor’s Office of Economic Development’s simultaneous launch of two small business startup accelerators in the Cities of Las Vegas and Reno!  A promise from my recent State of the State Address, now becoming a reality!

These accelerators will pair their support with investments that the State will make in early-stage businesses throughout Nevada as part of the federal State Small Business Credit Initiative program once our plan is approved by the U.S. Treasury.

Alongside Nevada’s State Small Business Credit Initiative program, gener8tor in Las Vegas and gener8tor in Reno will invest in and accelerate at least 10 small businesses and startups per year. Each accelerator will hold free, in-person, and virtual programming and office hours throughout the year. And our accelerators will ensure that more startups and small businesses not only survive but thrive in Nevada!

Governor Sisolak Participates in an Affordable Housing Roundtable Discussion in Northern Nevada

Image

This week, I had the opportunity to participate in an affordable housing roundtable discussion with leaders from the City of Reno, Washoe County, and the City of Sparks. We need to make a significant difference in our housing economy, and we must do it as quickly as possible. Housing is inextricably connected to our recovery, to our economy, and the success of our families. Right now, for too many, homeownership feels out of reach. And constantly rising rental prices make it even harder for families to get ahead on saving.

That’s why I announced the “Home Means Nevada” initiative during my recent Nevada State of the State Address, a $500 million investment. And why Nevada Housing Division prioritized their bonding capacity for housing to invest an additional $300 million. I am grateful to the Nevada Legislature for continuing to prioritize the needs of Nevadans and joining me to make the housing crisis a priority; for our seniors, our veterans, our teachers - all Nevadans. We are all united on this, and I am going to do everything I can!

Governor Sisolak Joins the Nevada Department of Veteran Services for the Dedication of the Crombie Academy in Boulder City

Image

Last week, I joined Director Kat Miller and the Nevada Department of Veteran Services for the dedication of the Crombie Academy in Boulder City.  This academy will provide an innovative and critically needed workforce development program in Nevada. We masked up as an extra layer of protection for those in the home.

The program offers free Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training, as well as job opportunities at the Southern Nevada State Veterans Home for those who complete the course and obtain their CNA certification with the passing of the State exam.

The school is aptly named after Private First Class, Nick Crombie. He was a spirited and passionate U.S. Army medic. Nick was 19 when he was killed while serving in the Iraq War. Sadly, we lost him at such an early age, but his enthusiasm in service as a medic will live on. May his memory forever be honored by this school and the CNA graduates who will continue to carry forward Nick’s work in healing and helping others.

Governor Sisolak Participates in Walk4Friendship, Supporting Individuals with Disabilities

This weekend, I had the honor of participating in this year’s Walk4Friendship in Las Vegas. Thank you to Rabbi Levi and everyone from The Friendship Circle for inviting me and making this important event possible.

I am proud of initiatives like these that bring us closer by creating a fully inclusive and non-judgmental environment to create lifelong friendships for individuals with disabilities.

As Governor, you have my commitment that I will always stand shoulder to shoulder with every single member of this community because everyone is deserving of friendship, and everyone can be a friend. Please know that as Governor of Nevada, you will always have a friend in me!

Construction Begins on New Engineering Building

On February 24, the State Public Works Division joined UNLV’s groundbreaking ceremony as construction kicked off on the new UNLV Engineering Academic and Research Building. The 3-story, 52,000 square foot building will serve the rapidly expanding UNLV College of Engineering, whose enrollment more than doubled between 2000 and 2017.

The project was initially approved during the 2017 legislative session and construction funding was included in the state’s 2021 Capital Improvement Program. This is the first notable engineering building that will be completed on the campus since 1988. It is slated to open spring semester of 2024. Learn more here.

The Baby Boom, the Wedding Boom … and Now the Insurance Boom?

Image

The arrival of a newborn or the celebration of a marriage is among the most important life milestones. The pandemic is fueling both a wedding and baby boom, according to experts. Fortunately, both births and weddings are life events that may qualify you to enroll in a health insurance plan through Nevada Health Link.

While open enrollment through Nevada Health Link is currently closed until November 1, these “qualifying life events” allow new parents or the newly married (among others) to enroll in insurance plans to cover their new life circumstances. Read more by clicking here.

Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Announces Moose Population is Growing in Nevada

Image

The Nevada Department of Wildlife has exciting news! The agency has received moose sightings since the 1950’s, and now biologists have almost 500 confirmed sightings in a growing database. In addition, biologists encountered 34 moose during their recent 2022 winter deer and elk surveys in Elko County. They also collared two moose a few weeks ago, making for a total of 10 collared moose in Nevada. The collars are helping NDOW biologists find other moose as well as showing them what habitat types they prefer.

Biologists have been closely monitoring collared cows (female moose) for the past three years and have documented at least 10 calves during that time. Nevada even has one cow that has had two sets of twins! Biologists are finding that the species is not only surviving but thriving in Nevada. Listen to this Nevada Wild podcast to hear from biologists working to learn more about the species.

Join Nevada Department of Veteran Services (NDVS) for the Annual Women Veterans Conference on March 12th

Image

NDVS is hosting their Annual Women Veterans Conference on 12 March 2022. The theme is: “Emergence: A Way Forward.” This hybrid event will take place in person at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center and will also be offered virtually through Zoom. The link will be provided to registrants prior to the Conference.

Women warriors are rising to prominence in the military and in their communities. But as women emerge and establish their place as leaders in our communities, many still face challenges. Whether these challenges began during their military service, because of a difficult transition back into civilian life, or for other reasons, with community support and connection to opportunities women veterans can find a path to fulfillment.
