Weekly Newsletter

This week, I joined Lt. Governor Cano Burkhead, Nevada Superintendent of Public Instruction Ebert, and Clark County Superintendent Jara at Gray Elementary School for Nevada Reading Week. A time to bring together educators, families, and community members to inspire the joy and importance of reading among all students across the Silver State.

Education is a top priority for me. That’s why during my recent State of the State address, I announced we are investing in teacher recruitment by providing nearly 4,000 future educators with stipends and tuition assistance to help address the teacher shortage.  During the pandemic we deployed $1.5 billion in federal funds for masks, testing, mental health support, and more - so we could reopen schools safely. Since I’ve been governor, we gave teachers their first directly funded raise in a decade, and we raised pupil funding to a new high.

Through the Donors Choose project, we asked educators what they needed and directly funded 11,000 projects to make schoolrooms buzz.

We’re also investing federal dollars to provide free lunch for all students across the state next year.

As we continue to move Nevada forward, you have my commitment the State will continue to make meaningful investments to support our educators and improve education for our students.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak Participates in the Opening of UNLV Immigration Clinic’s Community Advocacy Office

Image

It is truly fitting to see this immigration clinic open right here, in the heart of Las Vegas, which will allow this center to deliver expanded free legal services in a location that is easily accessible to more members of our community.

This is why I was proud to sign into law Assembly Bill 376, sponsored by Assemblywoman Torres, to establish the Keep Nevada Working Task Force and allocate $500,000 to make this expansion possible.

I want to particularly thank UNLV Law Professor Michael Kagan and the many past and present students for their work to assist with this urgent need for access to justice in our community.
Nevada has an ongoing commitment to welcoming immigrants and refugees in our State. We embrace those that flee prosecution and fear for their families’ lives and safety.

I have always called for a welcoming Nevada where home means Nevada to everyone – no matter where they are from.

Governor Sisolak Participates in the Launch of the Nevada Craft Beverage Passport

Image

Last week, I was honored to join the Nevada Department of Agriculture for the launch of the Nevada Craft Beverage Passport. This is a great opportunity to support our small businesses and enjoy Nevada-made products.

These small businesses play an important role in Nevada’s economy, contributing more than $135 million. As I mentioned during my State of the State, supporting our small businesses remains an important priority for me.

We are proud of these establishments – many award-winning-representing Nevada. From northern Nevada to southern Nevada, I hope this program encourages everyone to support our local businesses and explore different areas of Nevada.

Thank you to everyone who came together for this new program, when we work together, there’s nothing we can’t do. Learn more about the program by following this link. And always remember to drink responsibly. Have a plan and take care of each other!

Governor Sisolak & First Lady Kathy Sisolak Attend the Nevada Chinese Association: The Year of the Tiger Spring Festival Gala

Image

Kathy and I were honored to attend the Nevada Chinese Association’s The Year of the Tiger Spring Festival Gala at UNLV. We were grateful for all of the amazing performances and to the Asian Community Development Council (ACDC) for providing free COVID-19 test kits during the event.

As Nevadans, we could not be more proud to celebrate the amazing heritage, rich history, and prominent contributions of the AAPI community in Nevada.

The AAPI identity is woven into the fabric and fundamentals that make America the country it is today. We must continue to commemorate initiatives like these that help remind us that our identities and cultures only further enrich this amazing State!

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: “Red Chair”

Image

When Aaryn Walker starts talking about her “Red Chair” furniture store at 3400 Lakeside Drive in Reno, the passion in her work comes through quite clearly, because what she does is a lot more than sell furniture.

“When you come into our store, you might think it’s like a museum, seeing classic furniture that some might say would be like walking through your grandparent’s house,” Walker said. “In fact, in my next life, I’d love to come back as the curator of a mid-century modern furniture museum.”

Walker searches out classic Danish pieces, a lot of barware and with pride says, that everything she has goes out better than she found them. She refurbishes everything, personally sands, strips, washes, and stains the furniture she finds so that when they go on sale, they are restored to the same condition they were when they originally sold as far back as the 1950s. Chairs are beautifully reupholstered, and brackets are repaired.

Walker is a Reno native, who is married to a fifth-generation Nevadan, and they have an 11-year-old daughter. She opened her store in October of 2003. She’s also proud of the fact that she has a good old-fashioned brick-and-mortar retail store. To see her work in person, store hours are Wednesday through Saturday from noon until 6 p.m. To see some of her inventory you can go to Chairish

Join Nevada Department of Veteran Services (NDVS) for the Annual Women Veterans Conference on March 12th

Image

NDVS is hosting their Annual Women Veterans Conference on 12 March 2022. The theme is: “Emergence: A Way Forward.” This hybrid event will take place in person at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center and will also be offered virtually through Zoom. The link will be provided to registrants prior to the Conference.

Women warriors are rising to prominence in the military and in their communities. But as women emerge and establish their place as leaders in our communities, many still face challenges. Whether these challenges began during their military service, because of a difficult transition back into civilian life, or for other reasons, with community support and connection to opportunities women veterans can find a path to fulfillment.
