Weekly Newsletter

This week, I am proud to announce Flowflex COVID-19 antigen at-home tests have arrived in Nevada and will be available for free in locations around the State.

Testing is very important and if you are not feeling well, I encourage you to utilize these at-home tests so you know your status to protect yourself, your family, and your community.

Thank you to all our partners for joining in this effort and everyone who worked to bring these tests to Nevada communities.

To find a distribution site, visit the Nevada Health Response website testing page. Distribution sites will be added to this page as they arrive and are available for members of the community to walk in and pick up a test. The website will also be updated weekly to show test kit availability.

Every household should also be sure to order the four free kits per household through the federal program. To order, visit: COVIDtests.gov - Free at-home COVID-19 testsThese two complementary programs should ensure that Nevadans have a free and accessible supply of at-home kits available to them when the need arises.

Together, we can each do our part to keep Nevada healthy!

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Governor Sisolak Visits ECDC African Community Center & Meets with Refugee Family

Image

This week, I had the opportunity to visit the ECDC African Community Center in Las Vegas and firsthand see the amazing work they continue to do in providing support and resources to refugees in our State.

During my visit, I was grateful to sit down and talk to an Afghan refugee family where I had one message for them, “You are always welcome in our State”.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: “Sumnu Marketing”

Image

Shaundell Newsome’s philosophy about his strategic grass-roots outreach company, Sumnu Marketing in Las Vegas, comes from a lifetime of experience.

“Everything we do in my message-driven African American business goes back to something my dad said,” said Newsome, who founded Newsome Marketing Enterprises in 2006. “He grew up in Brooklyn and came from a place of destruction. He said do something new (SUMNU) and be constructive.”

Newsome, a retired Air Force Buck Sergeant, said that philosophy boils down to family and faith - treat everyone like family and have faith in God so they can provide excellence in everything they do.

Sumnu Marketing is a respected firm that works with the likes of the RTC, NV Energy, Clark County, and the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas.

“The service we provide for an entity such as the RTC takes the details of new construction and public transportation routes directly to the neighborhoods and provides feedback to the RTC,” Newsome said. “We translate those proposals so people in those neighborhoods can better understand what’s happening.”

Sumnu Marketing’s suite of services includes Small Business Development, In-House Marketing Services, Small Business Training, Small Business Branding in addition to the aforementioned Grass Roots Outreach.

Office of Energy Releases Annual Status of Energy Report

Image

This week, the Nevada Governor’s Office of Energy (GOE) released its annual Status of Energy Report. The past year has brought significant state and federal policy changes to Nevada’s renewable energy, energy efficiency, and transportation electrification landscape, setting the stage for a very exciting 2022, and GOE’s program work in 2021 underscored a focus on transportation electrification and reaching the state’s renewable portfolio standard, all with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Nevada has led the way in the discussion around a western regional electricity market through several regional working groups and the formation of a Regional Transmission Coordination Task Force, thanks to Senate Bill (SB) 448, and GOE continues to collaborate with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada, electricity providers, the renewable energy industry, and conservation organizations to ensure Nevada reaches our target of 50 percent clean energy by 2030. View the full report

NDOT Launches Cultural Resources Latino Project & Seeks Input from Reno/Las Vegas Communities to Inform Future Projects

    Image

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and contractor Mead & Hunt are working to develop a Multiple Property Documentation Form (MPDF) for Latino-related properties in Nevada with a primary focus on Las Vegas and Reno. This is an exciting new project that will pave the way for similar DOT projects to preserve the rich cultural fabric of our communities across Nevada. The resulting work, an MPDF, seeks to reflect the way the Latino community defines importance and use of properties and how properties have a direct association with the themes and their chronological periods in the historic contexts and/or which physical features convey distinctive design features.

Members of the public can submit documents, photos, and locations anonymously using this interactive map of Nevada. For more information, visit https://bit.ly/nv-latino-history

Nevada’s Energy Assistance Program has Received Funds from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to Assist Nevadans with Rising Energy Costs

Image

The Nevada Energy Assistance Program helps Nevadans reduce their heating and cooling bills. In addition, the program can help households get caught up on their heating and cooling bills if they are behind on payments. Eligible households receive a one-time benefit usually paid directly to the energy provider. The new federal funds will allow the program to increase the number of households that can be served.

To be eligible for the program, a household must meet the minimum qualifications including U.S. citizenship, Nevada residency, household income that does not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty guidelines, and the household must be responsible for paying home energy costs. Download an application from dwss.nv.gov/Energy or pick one up at any DWSS office or at any of our approximately 40 Energy Assistance intake sites across Nevada. Send your completed application in the mail, or fax, or drop off at any DWSS office, at any Energy Assistance intake site, or send it to the email address listed on the application.

Celebrating Chinese New Year in Downtown Carson City

Image

Nevada State Museum (NSM) in Carson City is pleased to announce that we will be celebrating Chinese New Year on Saturday, February 5th at 10:00 am. We will hold the event in the park in front of the museum and stream it on Facebook. There will be crafts, dancers, music, and a parade down Carson St to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada.

“We look forward to offering this event every year,” Myron Freedman, Administrator of the Nevada Division of Museums and History, said. “This program brings life to Chinese cultural objects displayed in our exhibits. Imagine a Chinese New Year parade marching through our scale model of 19th century Winnemucca’s Chinatown in our History Gallery.” People from China have lived in Nevada as early as 1851. The museum holds extensive collections from several Chinese settlements throughout Nevada.

This program is funded in part by a grant from Nevada Humanities, and the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information click here.
