News from Representative Smucker

As our country and community continue to safely reopen our economy, we must stay informed. For the most up to date information on COVID-19, I encourage you to visit the dedicated page on my website. You can view the actions that Congress has taken, information for small business owners, economic relief payments information, and volunteer opportunities.

Answering Your Questions:
My office has received many inquiries from constituents regarding their unemployment benefits. As unemployment benefits are administered by the state, I encourage you to visit the Pennsylvania Office of Unemployment Compensation’s website. If you are still having trouble with unemployment, I encourage you to reach out to your representatives in the General Assembly. You can find their contact information here

Economic Impact Payments provide direct relief to the American people. Many constituents have reached out to my office regarding the status of their payments. For more information, watch my brief video about Economic Impact Payments. The IRS’s website has a full list of questions and answers for different situations regarding the payments.

Last week, I held a telephone town hall with constituents across the Eleventh District to provide an update on my activities in Washington, DC and to answer questions. Click the video below to listen to our conversation.

A number of you have recently written to me about H.R. 2 and investing in our nation’s infrastructure. I want to thank you for sharing your thoughts and wanted to share with you my thoughts on the legislation.

Unfortunately, the legislation was not a serious effort to address and improve our nation’s surface transportation infrastructure. Rather than engaging in earnest and cooperative policymaking, House Democrats drafted H.R. 2 without any Republican input. Despite Republicans offering hundreds of amendments in committee, nearly all amendments offered were rejected. To view my full thoughts on H.R. 2, watch my video below.

Around our Community:
The deadline for the Paycheck Protection Program has been extended to August 8th. More than 166,000 loans and close to $21 billion have been administered in Pennsylvania, saving thousands of jobs and businesses.

ImageLast week, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced that they are committing nearly $4 million to assist Lancaster and York County farmers reduce excess sediment and nutrients from flowing into the Chesapeake Bay. It is refreshing to see the partnership the EPA has established with our farmers under President Trump’s administration.

Last week, I visited several companies around the Eleventh District to learn how they have been adapting to the new challenges of COVID-19 and how they are creating safe environments for their employees to return to work.

I visited Conestoga Wood Specialties in East Earl to learn how they are addressing COVID-19 so that their employees can safely return to work.

I also visited Caputo Brothers Creamery in Spring Grove and learned how they have found ways to expand and adapt in the face of these challenges.

Lastly, I met with realtors in York County to see how COVID-19 has impacted the real estate market and how the federal government can support current and aspiring homeowners.

It is important to continue to help our small businesses and all employers throughout our district so that employees can keep their jobs and provide for their families.

Governor Wolf needs to allow local leaders make decisions that are best for their communities. Throughout this pandemic, the governor has lacked transparency when making decisions on when businesses are allowed to reopen and he has failed to answer questions regarding his failure to keep our nursing home and long-term care facilities safe.

Last week, Governor Wolf announced new restrictions against bars and restaurants – restrictions which are not based on a clear, data driven plan. It was reported in a York Dispatch article, “The governor’s office did not provide answers to questions about the data or scientific reasoning the governor relied on to write the latest restrictions.” The fact is, York and Lancaster County restaurants are going to close forever because of the governor’s actions, which do not reflect the reality of what is happening in our community.

I joined my PA GOP colleagues in writing to Governor Wolf to address his decision to withhold federal funds from Lebanon County. There’s simply no excuse for Gov. Wolf to withhold federal funding provided by the CARES Act which was intended to support all counties responding to COVID-19.

Washington, DC Update:
Friday, I introduced the Enabling Online and Virtual Workforce Training Act, to provide flexible training and upskilling opportunities to individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. View my full statement on my website.

I co-sponsored Congressman Tom Rice’s (SC-7) new bill H.R. 7615 to create the Healthy Workplace Tax Credit. This bill will provide a tax credit to businesses that create a safe environment for their employees by providing personal protective equipment, testing, and heightened disinfecting and cleaning services in the workplace.

I voted in favor of H.R. 6395, the National Defense Authorization Act, because it ensures the brave men and women of our armed forces have the resources they need to carry out their mission and keep our nation safe.

On Wednesday, I voted in support of the Great American Outdoors Act.    This bipartisan legislation provides the funding necessary to address the $20 billion worth of deferred maintenance at our national parks, forests, and other public lands. The bill also ensures that the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) is permanently funded through energy development fees to help keep America clean and pristine. View my full statement on the Great American Outdoors Act.
