News from Representative Smucker

Since March, there has been a lot of new information regarding the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. For the most up to date information, I encourage you to visit the dedicated page on my website. You can view the actions that Congress has taken, information for small business owners, economic relief payments information, and volunteer opportunities

CARES Act Questions:

Since the passage of the CARES Act, one of the questions my office has received most frequently is the status of “stimulus checks” or Economic Impact Payments.

People are receiving their Economic Impact Payments in three ways: via direct deposit, check or by debit card which you will receive in the mail with instructions on how to retrieve the funds. If you have yet to receive your payment you can visit IRS.GOV/get-my-payment. Once there, click on ‘get my payment’, input your information and the IRS will update you on the status.

To date, the IRS has distributed over 120 million Economic Impact Payments by direct deposit, 35 million by check and 4 million in the form of the pre-paid debit card.

There are still many individuals who may not regularly file taxes who are eligible to receive this benefit. Those who are eligible need to provide information to the IRS via the Non-Filers tool on the IRS website.

For a full list of questions and answers regarding the status of your EIP visit the IRS website.

My office has also received questions from constituents regarding their unemployment benefits. As unemployment benefits are distributed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, I encourage you to visit the Pennsylvania Office of Unemployment Compensation’s website. If you are still having trouble with unemployment benefits, I encourage you to reach out to your state representative or state senator. You can find their contact information here.

The Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has saved thousands of jobs and businesses in our Congressional District. The original deadline has been pushed back and now you can apply for a PPP loan until August 8, 2020. Visit the SBA’s website to learn more about who qualifies for a PPP loan.

Connecting with PA-11:

On Wednesday July 8, I held a telephone town hall meeting. To listen to the meeting, click the image below.

I visited with Executive Coach to learn how the motorcoach industry has been adversely affected by COVID-19. I also met with Fulton Bank and Bird-in-Hand Bank to learn how they have helped customers with PPP to save small businesses and jobs in our community. Meeting with Executive Coach and both banks proved that the PPP helped, but for our hospitality industry and small businesses to succeed we must continue to safely reopen our economy.

I want to hear how your business is dealing with COVID-19 and safely reopening. If you own a business in Lancaster or southern York counties and would like me to come visit, fill out this form on my website.

USMCA- A Win for Famers and Manufactures:

On July 1, 2020, the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) went into effect, directly benefitting farmers, manufacturers and their employees across Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional District. As the number one congressional district in Pennsylvania for agriculture production, the USMCA creates a level playing field for our farmers and opens new markets for their products. I would like to thank President Trump and his Administration for their willingness to work with me to ensure USMCA is a win for farmers, manufacturers and employees in our district. I spoke on the House Floor about the benefits that the USMCA will have on our district.

Washington, DC Update:

Last week, I was elected by my Republican colleagues to serve as the Sophomore Class Representative to the Republican leadership team It’s an honor to join the House Republican leadership team. The House Republican Conference is working to move America forward, to promote a robust economic recovery and create jobs to help families access and achieve their American Dream.

On July 7, I joined the House Committee on Education and Labor subcommittee hearing on the impact COVID-19 has had on higher education. Click the image below to view my remarks.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office confirmed there is an ongoing ‘thorough, holistic, and wide-ranging investigation’ into Coronavirus and Pennsylvania’s nursing homes ‘using all the tools the office has available.’ For months, Congressional Republicans along with members of the Pennsylvania Congressional delegation have been calling on Gov. Wolf to address the dire situation of COVID-19 in long-term care facilities and nursing homes.

Fighting for Farmers:

Representing the number one agriculture producing district in Pennsylvania, I know that our dairy farmers are struggling with low prices. By making dairy market access a top priority in our Phase Two trade negotiations with Japan, we can provide additional opportunities for our hardworking dairy farmers across the nation to succeed. I co-led a bipartisan letter to United States Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Lighthizer and United States Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue urging their offices to work swiftly on a comprehensive Phase Two trade agreement with Japan.

Celebrating our Natural Beauty:

July is National Parks and Recreation Month. Our congressional district is blessed with great natural beauty and opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. I voted in support of the John D. Dingell, Jr. Conservation, Management, and Recreation Act (Pub.L. 116-9), which was signed into law on March 12, 2019. The law consists of more than 100 public land bills, including my legislation the Susquehanna National Heritage Area Act (H.R. 262), which designated parts of the 11th Congressional District (Lancaster and York counties) as National Heritage Areas (NHAs).
