Weekly Newsletter

This week, I joined the Las Vegas Chamber's 'Preview Las Vegas' at Allegiant Stadium.  I was honored to be able to speak briefly about our future.

Here in Nevada, we are truly reborn and ready for the next chapter of the Nevada success story. The future of Nevada and Las Vegas is as bright as ever.

Doubters have bet against Nevada before.  And yet, here we are leading the nation in economic growth and opportunity, not long removed from record job losses.

In 2021, Nevada claimed the top spot in the Index of State Economic Momentum rankings based on states’ most recent performance in three key measures of economic vitality: personal income growth, employment growth, and population growth.

Given what our business community has been through, I was proud to announce just a few months ago that there would be no unemployment insurance tax increase imposed on our businesses in 2022.

I stand ready to help you help the state reach new heights. Nevada’s best days remain ahead of it.  And I cannot wait to see what you are all able to accomplish in the future.

Thank you,

Governor Sisolak

Governor Sisolak, Assemblywoman & Leader of the Black Legislative Caucus Daniele Monroe Moreno Pay Homage to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy

Assemblywoman Daniele Monroe Moreno and I are dedicated to service for all those to whom home means Nevada. Dr. King left an indelible imprint on our nation’s history as a civil rights leader who fought to end racial inequality, eradicate racial segregation and advance human rights for all people.

At a time when lawmakers across the country are attempting to roll back access to the polls, Nevada continues to push forward to make voting more accessible. Voting is the most powerful nonviolent tool we have, and laws we enacted will ensure our democratic process remains in place. We have seen the gaping cracks in our society that are a result of fundamentally flawed systems. We need not be afraid to speak truth to power and to build toward a more just society.

From there we can have an honest dialogue that will lead to the healing and change that our community needs. This is not something that can be done alone, it’s going to take all of us working together -- to heal, to bring justice, to make Nevada a warm and welcoming place for all. Please know you have a commitment from us to be leaders and partners in this work - Thank you.

Governor Sisolak Hosts Roundtable on Climate Change

Image

Image

This week, I was proud to host a roundtable discussion with community leaders and advocates to discuss the impacts of climate change, the economic opportunities of climate action, and potential next steps the State could take in our climate initiatives. We all know we need to act, and we have taken some important steps together.

In 2019, the Nevada Legislature adopted GHG emissions reduction targets that include getting to net-zero by 2050. I committed Nevada to the United States Climate Alliance, a bipartisan group of states committed to achieving the goals set by the Paris Accords. In late 2019, I issued an Exec. Order on climate change, setting the stage for the state’s first comprehensive Climate Strategy—which was delivered in 2020. And most recently, in continued recognition of the importance of climate change, I appointed our first Senior Climate Advisor in my office, Dr. Kristen Averyt.

As long as I am Governor, know you have my commitment that there will be further climate action coming from my Administration - Thank you!

Governor Sisolak Presents Proclamation in Solidarity with the Jewish Community at Jewish Nevada Annual Meeting

Image

This week, I spoke at the Jewish Nevada annual meeting, where I presented a proclamation in solidarity with the Jewish community alongside my friend, Shelley Berkeley.

The tragic events that took place at Congregation Beth Israel recently, could have happened at any synagogue, community center, or school in the country. People, regardless of faith, should not have to live in fear for their life because of their religion.

As Governor, you have my commitment that I will always stand shoulder to shoulder with the Jewish community in the face of antisemitism and will work tirelessly to fight it in Nevada.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: “Dish Cafe and Catering”

Image

Ask those who regularly order catering services in Reno, and one name will come up consistently, Dish Cafe and Catering. Owner Joe Horn says they have one secret – order the highest quality ingredients.

“We take food you’re probably familiar with, but we make them better than you can or would want to do them,” Horn said. “We all know how to make a mac and cheese, but when we do it, it’s with Dijon and beechwood cheddar. Our claim to fame is our tri tip because we never sacrifice product, we never change our vendor, we always go with the best we can find.”

Horn credits his wife Nancy with starting the Dish “as comfort food with a modern twist” nearly two decades ago. While Dish’s restaurant near Renown Hospital in Reno is temporarily closed due to staffing issues related to the COVID pandemic, the catering end of the business is doing well. He credits federal, state, and local relief efforts for keeping the business afloat during the pandemic without having to lay off any employees. He’s confident he’ll be able to open the restaurant up again later this Spring.

“Utterly delicious and ridiculously craveable,” Horn says. Dish is famous for upscale comfort food, using fresh, local organic ingredients to create fun, festive, flavorful dishes for corporate breakfasts and lunches, and events for up to 100 people. For more information about their menus go to dishcafecatering.com, call 775-848-3525, or email Joe@dishcafecatering.com

Federal Funding on Its Way to Help Renovate Nevada Bridges

Image

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently announced that $225 million will be made available to improve Nevada bridges, made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

There are more than 2,000 public bridges in Nevada. While Nevada bridges have been ranked the nation’s very best for the previous seven years, more than 500 of Nevada’s state-owned bridges are 50 years of age or older, an age when rehabilitation is often necessary.

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) and partners will utilize the funds to make critical bridge enhancements across the state and further keep Nevada drivers, and commerce, safe and connected.

Community Organizations Sought to Offer Child Meal Sites

Image

The Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA) is seeking sponsors to provide free meals to children through the federally funded Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). SFSP ensures that students who depend on school meals have nutritious food when school is not in session. Meals are available to children 18-years-old or younger during school closures, no questions asked.

Sponsor participation and meal sites are needed to ensure Nevada's youth in low-income areas have continued access to healthy meals and snacks. Organizations interested in becoming a sponsor should contact Lindsay Talbot at 702-668-4581 or LTALBOT@agri.nv.gov by March 25, 2022. For more information about SFSP, click here.

Nevada Department of Conservation & Natural Resources launches “Conserve Nevada” Grant Program

Image

This week, the Nevada Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (NDCNR) launched the next phase of one of the State’s most important and successful conservation and recreational grant programs. Formerly known as the Conservation and Resource Bond Program approved by Nevada voters in 2002, the new and expanded program will be known as “Conserve Nevada.” From creating fire-resilient landscapes and ecosystems, to protecting rivers and wetlands, to advancing sustainable outdoor recreation opportunities for families and visitors, to preserving historic and cultural treasures, the Conserve Nevada program will help cultivate a healthy, vibrant Nevada for generations to come.

Nevada residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in an upcoming Listening Session to learn more about the Conserve Nevada program and help identify and prioritize new grant projects.
