Weekly Newsletter

This week, I had the honor of joining Nevada Department of Veteran Services Director Kat Miller, veterans and their families for a special ceremony to thank and honor all those who have protected and served our nation.

Every veteran who served helped preserve our great union and advance the principles of democracy throughout the world.

The State of Nevada continues to honor the almost 45 million men and women who served our nation during times of war, and the over 656,492 service members who were killed in action since the Revolutionary War, including the 13 brave patriots lost during the evacuation of Kabul Afghanistan this past August.

While we will never be able to express our profound gratitude to those warriors who never returned home, today we CAN pay tribute to those men and women who did return home, and to those currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.

To each Veteran, active, guard, reserve service member, and their family members, please accept my deepest appreciation for your service to our Nation.

Thank you,

Nevada to Hold Unemployment Insurance Tax Rate Steady

                      Image

Businesses will not face an unemployment insurance (UI) tax rate hike in 2022, Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak announced. The announcement comes after considerable analysis, conversation and discussion between the Governor’s Office, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation and the Nevada business community.

Last month, the Employment Security Council (ESC) recommended an increase of the state UI tax on employers, from 1.65 percent to 2 percent. After considerable discussion with the business community, the Employment Security Division Administrator will put forth a regulation that holds the 1.65 percent average tax rate constant for 2022. In addition to no change to the Average UI Tax Rate, DETR worked with other state agencies to use American Rescue Plan funds to repay federal loans used to continue unemployment benefits during the pandemic, resulting in no loans and no interest for the UI Trust Fund to repay. Governor Sisolak Participates in the Groundbreaking of Fontainebleau Located at the North End of the Las Vegas Strip

Image

I would like to thank everyone from Fontainebleau for inviting me to participate in the long-awaited event for the Fontainebleau at the north end of the Las Vegas Strip! The revitalization of the north end of the Las Vegas Strip will not only help solidify our place as a global leader in hospitality and tourism, but this project will as well help Nevada create approximately 3,200 construction jobs and 6,000 permanent operation jobs.

I look forward to returning in 2023 as the Fontainebleau opens its doors and we continue to show the rest of the world how great this city and our State are!

Thank you to Frank Hawk and everyone at Carpenters 1977 for inviting me to speak at the Carpenters Union Delegate Meeting where the room was filled with over 350 members – All fully vaccinated! This meet was a reminder of how Nevada Continues to be UNION STRONG!

The theme’s meeting was “Salute to Veterans”. The Military helps teach us so much-once our veterans have returned from protecting our country, they are much more prepared to engage in our workforce and we will never stop being grateful for all that they do – Thank you!

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: “Bad Beat Brewing”

Image

When Nathan Hall opened Bad Beat Brewing in Henderson back in 2014, he showed his hand in designing a logo with a Seven and a Deuce.

“I love craft beer and you can see there is a poker theme,” Hall said. “I just decided to go all in one day and so far, it’s worked out well.”

Brewing good beer with a gambling theme seems like a low-risk bet in Nevada. But for Hall, opening Bad Beat Brewing meant selling his house and investing every dollar in his bank account to fund his dream. One of the developments in Bad Beat Brewing that Hall is proud of is Amanda Koller, the first female head brewer in Nevada.

Bad Beat Brewing features four year-round offerings:

  • The Ringer – German Pilsner 5 percent.
  • I Love NV – Amber Lager 5.1 percent.
  • Bluffing isn’t weisse – Hefeweizen 5.1 percent.
  • Hoppy Times – IPA 7 percent.
Bad Beat Brewing features steel tip darts, original Nintendo, Cards Against Humanity, giant Jenga and shuffleboard. There is a movie projector to watch the game. The day we spoke to Nathan, he said there was a food truck, which comes every Thursday night, and a trivia night. He encouraged people to bring their own food into the tap house.

Bad Beat Brewing is located at 7380 Eastgate Road, #110. For more information go to their website at badbeatbrewing.com.

Families that have children eligible for the credit who didn’t get it automatically this year, generally because they don’t make enough money to file a tax return, can go to GetCTC.org/NV before November 15 to claim their money.

The money from the Child Tax Credit will not affect eligibility for public assistance programs such as Medicaid, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).

Nevadans Encouraged to Share Input, Shape the Future of Water Management Across the State

                    Image

This week, the Nevada Division of Water Resources released a survey to gather input from the public on all aspects of water management in Nevada to help guide the development of an updated State Water Plan. The survey is available online now through December 15, 2021.

The State Water Plan will serve as a high-level policy and planning guide focused on addressing Nevada’s many complex water challenges, including the increasing demand for limited water resources, floods, prolonged drought, dam safety, and sustainment of our wetlands and freshwater ecosystems – all within the over-arching context of Nevada’s rapidly growing population and the accelerating impacts of climate change occurring in all corners of the state.

Partnership Restores Flows to Little Washoe Lake

Image

Little Washoe Lake water levels are now recovering after the Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) worked with partners to repair a water diversion ditch that feeds the Washoe Lakes system. Little Washoe and portions of the Scripps WMA dried up during summer 2021 due to the lack of precipitation and associated stream flows caused by consecutive drought years. NDOW volunteered to fund repairs to a diversion ditch which could provide long-term relief for the lake system. Learn more here by clicking HERE.
