Smucker in the District

Hello, Friends

Thank you for subscribing to my E-newsletter!

It was great being back in the 11th District last week, where I traveled throughout communities and heard directly from folks at home about what we should be tackling in Congress. Hearing directly from my constituents about the issues facing the community helps me get it right in Washington.

This week, I had the opportunity to visit and walk through our local Lancaster county Home Depot. I appreciate Kyle teaching me about their paint department. Keep up the great work, Kyle!

Here is a fun video of my visit…

During the district week, I had the opportunity to present Elizabeth Silbaugh Johnides, a constituent from Hanover, PA, with a copy of the Congressional Record which included my remarks about her outstanding service to the community in Hanover. To see my speak about her accomplishments on the House floor, click here.

I also had the opportunity to visit the Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover with the new Mayor of Hanover SueAnn Whitman. At the library, I read a book to children about the importance of voting.

I toured the Elsner Engineering Works, a manufacturer of machines and equipment in Hanover, PA.

I finished the week at the PA Career Link Facility in York County to discuss the work they are doing to help veterans and individuals reenter the workforce.

The USMCA Is Signed Into Law!

On Wednesday, President Trump delivered on his promise to replace the outdated North American Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA) and signed into law the much-awaited United States-Mexico-Canada (USMCA) trade agreement.

The USMCA delivers on the promise President Trump made to replace the outdated North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. This deal marks a tremendous victory for Pennsylvania workers, farmers, manufacturers, and businesses. It has the potential to create nearly 600,000 jobs and generate up to $235 billion in economic activity.”

In Pennsylvania, trade with Canada and Mexico is essential. Over 42,000 jobs depend upon manufacturing exports to Canada and Mexico. The USMCA will provide businesses across the Commonwealth with new opportunities and will create new jobs with family-sustaining wages.

The signing of the USMCA into law means expanding and opening new market access for our Pennsylvania dairy, egg and poultry producers. New markets are welcome news for the nearly 7,000 family-owned and operated farms in PA-11. Our farmers in York and Lancaster Counties, who are national leaders in the production of milk and eggs, have only asked for a level playing field which to compete.

This modern trade deal brings our trade relationship with Canada and Mexico into the 21st century, protecting American intellectual property and ensuring strong, effective protections for innovators and creators. I congratulate the President for delivering on his promise, and I look forward to continuing to work with him to implement policies that benefit Pennsylvania and our nation.

The President and Vice President gave outstanding remarks at the signing of the bill, for those who may have not been able to watch, here is a link to watch the full bill signing.

March For Life

On Friday, thousands of people from across America came to our nation’s capital to March for Life. I applaud President Trump for making history as becoming the first sitting president to attend the march. In his remarks, he reaffirmed his commitment to implementing pro-life and pro-family policies. Since 2017, the Trump Administration has established more conscience protections than ever before. While progress has been made, there is still more to accomplish.

It is always heartening to see so many young adults, families, and college groups come to peacefully demonstrate for the rights of the unborn. The fight to protect life from conception is one that involves all of us.

#NeverAgain

January 28th, 2020 marked the 75th year since the liberation of over 7,000 prisoners from the German Nazi Auschwitz camp. For nearly five years, these resilient individuals, including 700 children, saw their loved-ones murdered while they endured humiliation, suffering, and pain.

I cosponsored and voted in favor of the bipartisan Never Again Education Act (H.R. 943), which authorizes funding to be used to develop and nationally disseminate resources to promote understanding about how and why the Holocaust happened. The education materials will be developed by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Democrats’ Dangerous Attempt To Repeal The AUMF

This week I voted against the House Democrats’ dangerous attempts to tie the hands of the Commander – in – Chief by repealing the Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF).

At a time when Congress should be projecting unity in the face of Iranian aggression, House Democrats have advanced a dangerous resolution that ultimately will accomplish nothing but division. By taking legal and necessary options off the table for the executive branch, this amendment emboldens our enemies and makes our nation less safe.

The safety and security of the American people at home and abroad should be the central focus of our foreign policy. I strongly oppose this legislation. We must keep Americans safe.

York County District Attorney’s Visits Washington

It was great to have York County District Attorney, Dave Sunday, in the office this week. He was in town for the National District Attorney Association 2020 Capital Conference. We discussed important criminal justice issues facing York County.

I appreciate his office’s efforts to keep our community safe and look forward to continuing our discussion.
