News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

It was a great week on Capitol Hill, and for two reasons.

First, my friend and colleague Steve Scalise returned to the Halls of Congress on Thursday. As you likely remember, Steve was shot and critically injured back in June during an attack on lawmakers and staff at a practice for the Congressional baseball game. The road to recovery was long for Steve, but he has persevered, and during his heartfelt address to the House, he again proved what it means to be Scalise strong. Welcome back Steve!

Second, on Wednesday, Republicans unveiled the framework for our new unified tax reform plan.

How Will Our Tax Reform Plan Help Every American?

This simple question has many different answers.

Based off the framework that House Republicans released this week, our new tax plan will allow Americans to keep more of their hard-earned paychecks by nearly doubling the standard deduction and shrinking the current number of seven tax brackets into three. I have always said that we cannot tax our way into prosperity, while allowing the American people to pick up the tab– and this plan will put an end to this unfair practice.

Our new tax plan will level the playing field for all Americans by eliminating special interest loopholes that benefit the wealthy and protect provisions that help the middle class, like the child tax credit, the charitable tax deduction and the home mortgage interest deduction.

Our new tax plan will also limit the rate in which small and family-owned businesses can be taxed. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, so it is imperative that we give them a chance to grow and succeed. I was especially pleased to see that this plan includes lowering the corporate tax rate to 20 percent, something that I have advocated for through my CREATE Jobs Act. This will allow American businesses to keep their jobs and revenue here in the United States, while allowing them to become internationally competitive once again.

The framework for the new tax plan contains so many fantastic elements that will benefit every single American, and I could not be more excited to see this framework debated as it works its way through the committee process. Every Child Deserves a Loving Home

This week, I had the pleasure of welcoming Dan and Jori Susanka to the Capitol for a ceremony honoring all of the Angels in Adoption honorees.

Dan and Jori recently adopted their son Elliot from China, but hit many roadblocks in the process. Fortunately, my office has skilled caseworkers, so with the determination of my staff and the Susanka family, Elliot was finally able to come home to Minnesota this year. Every child deserves a loving home, which is why I am ecstatic to see Dan and Jori recognized for providing Elliot with just that.
