News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

This week was well spent, as I spent time in Minnesota meeting with folks who are working to better our state, so that all Minnesotans can thrive.

I had the chance to visit the Eagle’s Healing Nest in Sauk Centre, to visit with their dedicated staff and learn more about the great work they do to help heal our veterans.

I toured Nettwork Manufacturing to learn all about this fantastic company, and the products they are making to improve the lives of our nation’s amputees.

Our veterans have sacrificed so much in order to take care of us, so it is our turn to take care of them once they return home. It is great to see that the incredible folks at the Eagle’s Healing Nest and Nettwork Manufacturing are doing just that.

Addressing a Crisis

I also made it over to the Horizon Roofing and Sheet Metal Training Center to meet with the Minnesota Associated Builders and Contractors to talk about the skills gap crisis that has been negatively affecting Minnesota, and to hear what this business is doing to help solve this problem.

One of the biggest falsehoods that we as a society are telling the generation of tomorrow is that they must attend a four-year university if they expect to thrive and prosper. This well-intended, but misinformed advice has actually had the opposite effect, leaving many critical jobs unfilled and numerous Americans without the career skills that they need in order to drive our economy forward.

That’s why I was glad to see that the Horizon Roofing and Sheet Metal Training Center is among one of the many companies in our state who have already taken a major step to solve this crisis. They have done so by dedicating part of their center to training by building mock-up roofs so their employees can continually improve upon their skills. This training will benefit the Horizon Roofing employees in their individual careers, but will also help Minnesota as a whole by giving them the skills needed to enhance our economy.

A lot has changed since 1986…

Shoulder-pads have gone out of style and mullets are no longer trendy.

Ferris Bueller, Top Gun and Crocodile Dundee are no longer in theatres.

While a lot has changed, unfortunately there is one thing that has not. I am talking about our broken tax code. It was 1986 when President Ronald Reagan signed the single largest reform in U.S. history into law. Now more than thirty-years later, our out-of-date tax code is working against the American people.

Like many of you, I know that we cannot tax our way into prosperity while forcing hardworking Americans to foot the bill. That’s why House Republicans are working to lower tax levels at every income level, so that everyone can keep more of their hard-earned money.

We are also striving to produce lower tax rates for American businesses, so that they can invest their money back into their business. American businesses are job creators and the backbone of our economy, making it vital to give them the chance to grow and expand, so that our economy can become the superpower it once was.

We are working on making fair and simple improvements so that every American will prosper, but we want your feedback! Click here to read more about it, and be sure to tell us what you think!
