Weekly Newsletter

This week, I was honored to join my wife and the First Lady of Nevada, Kathy Sisolak for her debut of “The First Lady Presents...” at the Governor’s Mansion.

This educational program provides a platform for local artists to share their art and creations with the rest of us. By doing so, they are enriching our State, allowing us to explore our past, and reminding us what makes our State so special.

The First and Lady and I would like to thank Kristen Dillard, the Nevada Governor’s Mansion Executive Director, Myron Freedman, Director of the Nevada State Museum, the Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City, and Mark Salinas, our public art consultant and curator and everyone for all of their help since the launch of this initiative.

The pandemic has been hard on all of us, especially on Nevada’s artistic communities. This is why efforts like these are important to our society as they help acknowledge the value artists and creators bring to our State.

Now more than ever, we need to rethink our environment, explore our past, and be grounded on the principles and creativity that are found in every Nevadan – These reasons and many more are why artists and creators make our State so great.

Thank you,

Gov Sisolak

Governor Sisolak Joins Students, Office For New Americans, & the Nevada System of Higher Education to Host Discussion on State & Federal Efforts to Bring Relief to Dreamers

Image

This week, I joined Office for New Americans & the Nevada System of Higher Education’s All Access Committee to meet with students at the Tyrone Thompson Student Union at the College of Southern Nevada.

We discussed DACA and efforts to bring relief to Dreamers, TPS holders, and farm and essential workers. I enjoyed listening to their stories directly. Our DACA recipients and DACA-eligible population have always been part of the fabric of Nevada and I am proud of the talents, skills, and contributions - especially during this COVID-19 pandemic - that they bring to our great State.
I am grateful for their resiliency and know how much better Nevada is because of them. This generation of students in particular has the potential to solve so many of the issues and problems we face.

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight: “Antonio’s Mexican Grill”.

Image

Thinking about taking in a movie or walking along the Truckee River in Downtown Reno, then check out Antonio’s Mexican Grill on the corner of Sierra and First Street. They offer validated parking for the Riverside Garage across the street.

“We have tacos, burritos, tortas, it’s fast food, but everything is fresh and authentic Mexican,” said Irma Valle, the owner of Antonio’s. “We have a full bar, we’re family-owned, and we have a nice atmosphere which is why people come back.”

Their website says they are “Grillin’ your tacos con sabor” which means they grill your tacos for you with flavor and a little bit of love. Founder Antonio Valle learned his craft as a young boy in a small town in Mexico and then in the busy streets of Chicago. For the past 17 years, the Valle family has been in business in Reno. The menu is quite extensive and traditional Mexican with tacos, burritos, gorditas, tortas, ensaladas, and deserts.

During the pandemic, Antonio’s was closed for a month and then survived with takeout food.
“The PETS grant we received was super important,” Irma Valle said. “It took care of three months rent. Without it, we shouldn’t have made it. I’m also grateful to the support we received from a local Hispanic Club that worked with the City of Reno that assisted minority and women-owned businesses.”

For more information on Antonio’s Mexican Grill, go to their website at antoniosgrill.com, call 775-870-9353 or drop by at 95 North Sierra Street, #103 in Downtown Reno.

Boards & Commissions

In September, I was proud to announce 46 appointments were made to State of Nevada boards, commissions, and agencies during the month of July and August. I have appointed hundreds of individuals since assuming office, and I encourage anyone who might be interested in serving Nevada and their community to review opportunities posted on the Governor’s WEBSITE, which is updated on an ongoing basis.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS?

The Governor makes appointments to three types of boards and commissions:

  • Advisory - An advisory board, commission or council serves as a formal liaison between a state agency and the public, in addition to making recommendations on how to address specific issues.
  • Regulatory Board - Regulatory boards are those that oversee the licensing, handle complaints, and enforce disciplinary actions of individuals or industries that fall within the jurisdiction of the board’s authority.
  • Task Force - A task force is created for the purpose of accomplishing a definite objective and goal.
