Weekly Newsletter

This week, I was proud to announce the sixth round of winners for Vax Nevada Days. I was joined by Shelly Berkley, CEO and Senior Provost of Touro University, and representatives of Immunize Nevada on this Celebration of COVID-19 vaccines and of fellow Nevadans who are choosing to protect themselves, their loved ones and our communities by getting vaccinated.

Like much of the nation, our state is struggling with physician and healthcare provider shortages. This private, non-profit medical school is helping to alleviate that shortage and training the healthcare providers of tomorrow. In so many ways, Touro University is helping Nevada fight this pandemic and we are so grateful for their important work and for allowing us to host this week’s Vax Nevada Day’s announcement on their campus.

I would like to congratulate all of yesterday's winners and remind my fellow Nevadans that everyone who gets vaccinated is a winner! Especially, Jennifer Y. from Las Vegas our $50,000 cash prize winner! . We’ve got 2 more weeks of prize drawings, including the $1 million grand prize drawing on August 26, so there’s still time to get vaccinated and get entered. Every vaccinated Nevadan is automatically entered. To see the full list of winners and to learn more click here.

To be entered in the rest of the Vax Nevada Day drawings, just get your COVID-19 vaccine. You’ll get protection from COVID-19 and a shot at some incredible prizes. Already vaccinated, you’re automatically entered. Find all the details at www.vaxnevadadays.org. And tune in next Thursday as we reveal more big winners live.

Lastly, If you have not taken advantage of the opportunity to get your vaccine, make an appointment by visiting NVCOVIDFighter.org or calling 1.800.401.0946

Thank you,

Gov Sisolak

This Week's Nevada Small Business Spotlight: "Lucky Joe's Saloon"

Image

Lucky Joe’s Saloon on Mountain Vista Street in Henderson near Ethel M Chocolates has a pretty loyal following. The painters and glazers union is around the corner. It’s a very representative neighborhood bar with pool tables, darts, and a wall of big-screen TVs which draws a good crowd every time the Vegas Golden Knights play. Joe Woody, the CFO of the El Cortez in downtown Las Vegas has been a part-owner of Lucky Joe’s since 2004.

“Everyone knows everyone,” Woody said. “We have a great manager in Deborah Montalvo who runs a clean place and does a great job with our customers.”

Woody faced some difficult business conditions as 2019 ended. Revenues were down. One of his business partners wanted out. The new landlord wanted him to sign a five-year lease in April 2020 as the pandemic was starting to hit. Woody had also sunk a large amount of his personal money into upgrading the bar.

“We lost our normal March Madness business when that was canceled,” Woody said. “Our utility bills were also higher because we had such a hot summer. I worked with the new landlord, and we took a big leap of faith.”

Like so many small businesses, Woody was stretched thin during the pandemic.
“The PETS program was so big and for us, it was before the PPP loans, and more important than anything else in surviving as a business because we were able to pay our rent with it with no other income,” Woody said. “I really appreciate what Governor Sisolak did for us and what he’s done for our community during COVID. And since things have opened back up, we’ve been doing better every month.”

Lucky Joe’s Saloon is located at 6250 Mountain Vista Street, Suite B in Henderson. They can be contacted at 702-435-7414, via email at email info@LuckyJoesSaloon.com or visit their website: https://www.luckyjoessaloon.com/ Image

What Veterans Should Know as a Renter or Landlord About the Eviction Moratorium Extension

Earlier this month the CDC issued a new order extending its eviction moratorium in counties seeing high levels or increasing cases of COVID-19. The extension runs through October 3, 2021. For property owners or landlords, federal COVID-19 relief funds are set aside through the CARES Housing Assistance Program (CHAP) to assist those negatively impacted by the pandemic. CHAP funds are specific to the payment of rent, rent late fees and utilities.
