Weekly Newsletter

This week, I was proud to announce the fifth round of winners for Vax Nevada Days. I was joined by Congresswoman Dina Titus and Frank Hawk, Vice President of Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters, and representatives of Immunize Nevada on this celebration of COVID-19 vaccines and of our fellow Nevadans who are choosing to protect themselves, their loved ones, and our communities by getting vaccinated.

I am grateful to everyone at the Southwest Regional Council of Carpenters for hosting us in their amazing venue. The Carpenters have continued to safely construct hospitals, schools, and vital infrastructure projects throughout the past 15 months. I am grateful for the continued efforts of all our partners – from labor and business groups who are keeping our economy going to healthcare workers on the front lines.

I would like to congratulate this week's winners and remind my fellow Nevadans that everyone who gets vaccinated is a winner! Especially, Jenny R. of Henderson, our $50,000 winner! We’ve got three more weeks of prize drawings, including the $1 million grand prize drawing on August 26, so there’s still time to get vaccinated and get entered. Every vaccinated Nevadan is automatically entered. To see the full list of winners and learn more, click here.

To be entered in the rest of the Vax Nevada Day drawings, just get your COVID-19 vaccine. You’ll get protection from COVID-19 and a shot at some incredible prizes. Already vaccinated, you’re automatically entered. Find all the details at www.vaxnevadadays.org. And tune in next Thursday as we reveal more big winners live.

If you have not taken advantage of the opportunity to get your vaccine, make an appointment by visiting NVCOVIDFighter.org or calling 1.800.401.0946

Thank you,
Gov Sisolak

Governor Sisolak, Treasurer Conine, and Congresswoman Titus Kick-Off Statewide Listening Tour for American Rescue Plan Funds

Image

This week, I was proud to help kick off the Nevada Recovers Listening tour at the East Las Vegas Community Center alongside members of the Nevada Legislature and Nevada's Federal Delegation, including Congresswoman Dina Titus and Treasurer Zach Conine. This tour will allow residents to provide input on how the State can utilize and invest the over $6.7 billion that will be received from the American Rescue Plan. As we move forward in this process, I am excited for our lawmakers to engage with their constituents and help bring more voices to the table as we embark on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our State to invest in our future and create a more resilient Nevada. Governor Sisolak Visits Home of a Participant in the Governor's Office of Energy's HEROS Program

Image

I had the opportunity to meet Ann, a participant in the Governor’s Office of Energy (GOE) Home Energy Retrofit Opportunity for Seniors (HEROS) program. As we visited in her home, I saw the improvements that have been made to make her house more energy-efficient, thanks to the HEROS program, funded by GOE and the Nevada Housing Division. Since 2015, the program has helped more than 900 homes become more energy-efficient, saving an average of 7,000 kWh per home. This program provides much-needed funding and technical assistance to low-income seniors in Nevada to make their homes more energy-efficient, safer, and more comfortable. Eligible seniors can apply through their local participating agency and can learn more by clicking on this link

This Week's Nevada Small Business Spotlight: "7 Hills Cleaners & Custom Tailoring"

Image

Before the pandemic hit, business was thriving at 7 Hills Cleaners & Custom Tailoring at 11155 Eastern Ave., Suite 110 in Henderson. This classic haberdashery does everything from tailoring suits, alterations, and dry cleaning.

“When COVID hit, 60 percent of our business dried up,” said owner Dennis Ashley. “We pivoted to making face coverings and masks, and we were still getting alterations because people were buying clothes online. We also had to repurpose some of our space”

However, much of Ashley’s business was tied to the hospitality and leisure sector such as the Cirque Du Soleil shows on the strip and casino employee uniforms.”

“Getting the PETS Grant was paramount in being able to keep our employees working,” Ashley said. “Not only that, but we were also able to hire three more people.”

7 Hills Cleaners & Custom Tailoring has eight employees who handle dry cleaning. Without the PETS Grant, Ashley said those employees who couldn’t transition to sewing duties may have been laid off.

As the economy has opened, Ashley said business has begun to return to pre-COVID levels. For more information on 7 Hills Cleaners & Custom Tailoring visit Sevenhillsclothiers.com or call 702-595-2443.Image

NDOW biologists recently worked on a project to locate moose that they previously collared to track in eastern Nevada. NDOW was able to locate six cow moose, and most of them have calves; one even has twins. This is exciting news for Nevada’s moose population, showing it continues to grow. See this video showing the cows with their young, and a clip of a bull moose biologists were also able to find!

New Highway Signs Are a Signal for Traffic Safety

Image

Nevadans will see creative new traffic safety messages on electronic freeway signs as the Nevada Department of Transportation displays the following traffic safety reminders voted on by Nevada drivers:

  • That’s The Temperature, Not the Speed Limit
  • Camp In The Mountains, Not the Left Lane
  • Turn Signals Come Free with Vehicles. Use Them.

The messages will periodically be displayed on some of the approximately 400 electronic freeway signs statewide. With over 90 percent of U.S. crashes caused in part by driver behavior such as speeding or driving impaired, distracted or recklessly, the message boards are an important driving safety reminder.

I am proud to announce 78 appointments were made to State of Nevada boards, commissions, and agencies during the month of June. I have appointed hundreds of individuals since assuming office, and I encourage anyone who might be interested in serving Nevada and their community to review opportunities posted on the Governor’s WEBSITE, which is updated on an ongoing basis.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS?

The Governor makes appointments to three types of boards and commissions:

  • Advisory - An advisory board, commission or council serves as a formal liaison between a state agency and the public, in addition to making recommendations on how to address specific issues.
  • Regulatory Board - Regulatory boards are those that oversee the licensing, handle complaints, and enforce disciplinary actions of individuals or industries that fall within the jurisdiction of the board’s authority.
  • Task Force - A task force is created for the purpose of accomplishing a definite objective and goal.
