News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

I want to begin by expressing our immense devastation over the brutal attacks that took place in Manchester, England this week. It has been devastating to hear the victim’s names and see their faces on the news, many of them children who had their entire lives ahead of them. I join all Americans in sending prayers to the victims and their families. We must stand with the United Kingdom and all of her people as we show that unity and compassion can prevail over terror.

Taking a Stand for the American Worker

Since 1992, the United States has signed more than one hundred Open Skies Agreements with other countries which has created a free-market environment for airlines and prevents state-owned airlines from monopolizing this critical industry. Unfortunately, not everyone has been playing fair. Both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have violated these agreements, much to the detriment of our airlines and American workers.

That’s why this week, I took part in a press conference encouraging the Administration to enforce our Open Skies Agreements to ensure that we can compete on a level playing field. Violations to these agreements hurt the United States as a whole, but our state of Minnesota, which is home to international hubs like the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport get hit extra hard. I was proud to stand with industry representatives and take a stand for the American worker.

Everyone Deserves a Loving Home

Earlier this week, I had the honor hosting Chrissy from Zimmerman, Minnesota in my office for Foster Youth Shadow Day. Once a foster child herself, Chrissy now provides her own foster child with a loving home. It was insightful to hear this incredible woman’s story and learn from her experiences. There are more than 450,000 foster kids living in this country, making it vital that we listen to their experiences and raise awareness on the issues surrounding foster care. I really appreciated Chrissy for stopping by to do just that!

A Somber Reminder

One of the best parts of my job is having the platform to honor our service members for everything they do for our nation and our people. I truly believe that they are the best that this nation has to offer. That is why it was such an honor to welcome the National Guard’s Bravo Company home from Afghanistan.

It filled my heart with joy to thank them face to face for their service, and to see their reunions with their families. However, it was also a somber reminder that not every service member returns home from his or her service.

That’s why, this upcoming Memorial Day, I wanted to leave you all with a message emphasizing the reason this holiday is so important. Check it out below.

Once again, thanks for staying up to date with the work I am doing for Minnesota’s Sixth District. Until next week…
