Standing up for America's Farmers

This week, I went to the floor of the House to speak about the importance of Congress adopting the United States - Mexico - Canada Agreement, known as the USMCA. Congress has a generational opportunity to help our farmers compete and thrive. Our Congressional District is in the top-ten for milk production and Lancaster County is number one in the country for egg-laying hens.

The USMCA would be beneficial for York and Lancaster County farmers, as Canada would eliminate its price control systems which had locked-out American dairy products from the Canadian markets. Additionally, Canada, under the USMCA, would increase its quota regimes to allow more American eggs and chicken into its markets.

I've spent a lot of time listening to the concerns of farmers in my district and one of the most common refrain that I heard was that they want to pursue new markets - and the USMCA would provide that.

I am urging leadership on both sides of the aisle to schedule the USMCA for a vote. Our farmers are counting on us and I will continue to fight for them.

Calling All Vietnam Veterans - Commemorative Pinning Ceremony in Columbia

I am proud to partner again with Sen. Pat Toomey's office to distribute 50th Anniversary Commemorative Pins, as a small token of appreciation for the brave men and women who served in our Armed Forces during the Vietnam War era.

The ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 15 at 8AM at Columbia High School, located at 901 Ironville Pike, Columbia, PA 17512.

Veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time between Nov. 1, 1955, and May 15, 1975, regardless of station location, and who did not receive a pin at the prior March 29, 2019 event at the Lancaster Airport, will be eligible to receive a lapel pin at this ceremony. Veterans' family members and veterans from all periods of service are invited to attend the ceremony.

For far too long we as a nation failed to give these brave men and women the recognition they rightfully deserve and I am honored to be able to recognize our Vietnam veterans. Please call my Lancaster office at 717-393-0667 with any questions.

Helping Small Businesses Connect with the Department of Defense

Earlier this month, I introduced a bipartisan bill, the Defense Small Business Advancement Act, to help connect small businesses in Pennsylvania and across the country with the Department of Defense by reauthorizing an expired mentorship program. Over the 30-year history of the program, the average small business who participated in this program added nearly 14 full-time jobs and earned more than $7 million in new revenue annually.

Our bill would increase participation among small businesses performing as suppliers to the Dept. of Defense, civilian agencies, and private industry by encouraging mentorships from established contractors.

Cracking Down on Student Debt Relief Scammers

This week I introduced bipartisan legislation with Congresswoman Haley Stevens of Michigan, which would give the U.S. Department of Education and law enforcement agencies the tools needed to identify and shut down student debt relief scams.

With Americans facing more than $1.5 trillion in student loan debt, predatory scammers are increasingly taking advantage of student loan borrowers who face a complicated loan repayment process. The scammers will use robocalls to harass student loan borrowers until the student agrees to pay unnecessary and exorbitant fees for services that are often already available for free. The victims of these schemes are not only defrauded, but also unknowingly become delinquent on their payments and default on their loans, falling deeper into debt.

I am proud to partner with Rep. Stevens on this critical issue and to help strengthen federal law to impose stricter penalties on these scams.

Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. 1 in every 5 people will be affected by mental illness in their lifetimes. We all must be there to support one another and improve awareness. We must consider additional steps to ensure access to high quality mental health care, like my bipartisan Warrior Wellness Act, which would ensure that the Department of Defense recruits and retains the best mental healthcare providers so veterans and service members are receiving the care they need to live happy and healthy lives.

Supporting our Law Enforcement Officers

Last week, we observed National Police Week. The heroes who keep our communities safe deserve our thanks and appreciation. Their jobs often put them in harm's way and we know they could work in another profession, but they choose to keep our communities safe. We owe them a debt of gratitude. Click below to watch my comments from the floor of the House to honor National Police Week.
