Dear Friends,

Do you ever wonder how the rest of the country thinks? Join me for my next Conversation about America with sociologist and bestselling author Arlie Russell Hochschild. Professor Hochschild will discuss her latest book, Strangers in Their Own Land, and answer your questions.

In Strangers in Their Own Land, Professor Hochschild takes readers on a thought-provoking journey from her liberal hometown Berkeley, California to Louisiana bayou country, a stronghold of the Tea Party and the conservative right. For five years she meets and gets to know people who strongly oppose many of her ideas and beliefs, but she still manages to find common ground with them about concerns that all Americans share: the desire for community, the embrace of family, and hopes for their children. Strangers in Their Own Land was a finalist for the National Book Award 2016 and one of “6 Books to Understand Trump’s Win” according to the New York Times the day after the election.
