Weekly Newsletter

This week, we have seen an unfortunate increasing trend in COVID-19 cases in Clark County and the emergence and increase in the Delta variant.

The State of Nevada requested additional assistance from FEMA to help address the increase in COVID cases and reduction in vaccination rates in Southern Nevada. We are working around the clock to leverage resources at the federal, state, and local levels.

The State is coordinating robust vaccination efforts, including standing up more vaccine and testing sites, organizing GOTV activities, and more. This additional support from our federal partners is necessary to assist in our outreach and efforts and I’m grateful for their support.

We know that in the last year and a half, the effects of this deadly virus have not changed, but our tools to fight the virus have – we now have vaccines, which are highly effective at reducing the severity of cases, hospitalization, and deaths. By working together to increase access and confidence in the vaccines, we can help bring these case numbers down and ensure our communities are healthy and safe.

In order for our State to overcome this pandemic, we must each continue to do our part. This is why I continue to implore all Nevadans who are eligible for the vaccine to take advantage of the opportunity and to make an appointment by visiting NVCOVIDFighter.org or calling 1.800.401.0946.

Together, we can overcome this Nevada.

Thank you,
Gov Sisolak

Governor Sisolak, Reno Mayor Schieve and Washoe Commission Chair Lucey Team Up to Become the First in the Country to Track Real-Time Carbon Emissions in Effort to Fight Climate Change

Image

This week, I was proud to be joined by Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve and Washoe County Commission Chair Bob Lucey as we announced that the State of NV will become the first state in the country to track our carbon emissions in real-time in an effort to ultimately reduce our carbon footprint. Collectively, if we can accurately measure our impact in real-time, we can more efficiently work to reduce our carbon output.  This is how we fight climate change and protect our State.

Thank you to MGM Resorts International for inviting me to speak during a press conference for their solar array project. This solar array is among the most significant steps the industry has taken to tackle climate change and promote renewable energy. The changing climate is already affecting Nevadans. We need to act now, we need to act quickly, and we need to act together so we can leave our children with a brighter future. Thank you, MGM Resorts International, for the work in furthering NV as a leader in clean energy!

This Week’s Nevada Small Business Spotlight:  “The Hydrant Club”

Image

The Hydrant Club is a unique hybrid of a high-end dog training facility and a membership-based social club. A pioneering business anchoring the redevelopment of the Fremont East District of Downtown Las Vegas, The Hydrant Club boasts the largest and only, private park space for members to enjoy along with private instruction, group day school, and overnight boarding for dogs. A "breed apart" from traditional dog care solutions, The Hydrant Club prides itself on addressing support for both ends of the leash.

“Explaining what it was like being a solo small business owner during an unprecedented global economic disaster in a state hit harder by the shutdown than almost any other in our nation can't fit into a simple sentence,” said Cathy Brooks, founder, and owner of The Hydrant Club. “Saying it was hard is a colossal understatement, it also was perhaps one of the greatest times to truly re-evaluate the way in which I was operating my business. As an essential services business, thankfully I remained in operation through the entirety of 2020. With massive hits to revenue, however, compounded by exponentially increased costs of operation, it is a great point of pride that not only was I able to remain in business, but that all bills were paid, no staff were laid off, and we are now positioned to vault forward as the economy of Las Vegas begins to roar back. One thing that contributed substantially to this status for my business is the array of grants, including the PETS grant, that allowed me to cover costs while finding additional ways to increase revenue streams. Grants and loans are never a good long-term strategy for business growth planning as they are one-time, short-term solutions. However, in the case of this last year, the grants provided by city, county, and state agencies were lifelines that enabled my business to survive and be one of those still standing to seize new opportunities in the great future that lies ahead.”

For more details about The Hydrant Club’s services and memberships, please visit its website at www.HydrantClub.com. To see great pictures and videos of dogs enrolled in the program, please use the handle @Hydrantclub on Facebook or Instagram.

Boards & Commissions

I am proud to announce 31 appointments were made to State of Nevada boards, commissions, and agencies during the month of May. I have appointed hundreds of individuals since assuming office, and I encourage anyone who might be interested in serving Nevada and their community to review opportunities posted on the Governor’s WEBSITE, which is updated on an ongoing basis.

  • Regulatory Board - Regulatory boards are those that oversee the licensing, handle complaints, and enforce disciplinary actions of individuals or industries that fall within the jurisdiction of the board’s authority.
  • Task Force - A task force is created for the purpose of accomplishing a definite objective and goal.
