News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

I kicked off this week by speaking at the Americas Society/ Council of the Americas in support of normalizing trade relations with Cuba. Not long after I was first elected to Congress two years ago, I took a trip to Cuba. During this trip I had the chance to visit with the Cuban entrepreneurs, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear how badly they wanted to see the trade relationship between our two countries improve. Upon my return from that trip, I introduced The Cuba Trade Act, which would lift the Cuba embargo and allow for businesses in the private sector to trade freely with Cuba.

I introduced this legislation because improving trade relations would not only benefit the Cuban people and their businesses, it would benefit Minnesotans as well. Minnesota is a major player in the agricultural industry, and because Cuba imports eighty percent of their food supply, trade with Cuba could be a great economic opportunity for our state.

With the recent passing of dictator Fidel Castro, I am hopeful that the Trump Administration will recognize the opportunity that has presented itself. Along with the economic opportunity, normalizing relations with Cuba would allow us to have a firmer hand on national security in the region as well. Now is the time to leave the failures of the past behind, and pursue new beginnings. To learn more about this issue, click here to read my latest op-ed in the Ripon Society.

Valentine’s For Veterans

As all of you know, Tuesday was Valentine’s Day. While everyone was out celebrating with their significant others, my staff was at the St. Cloud VA handing out Valentines to our veterans and thanking them for their dedicated service.

I am so grateful that my staff was on hand to give our veterans the thanks and recognition they deserve, but I think we can all agree that they deserve more than just recognition. Our nation’s heroes also deserve to be assisted and taken care of by the institutions designed to help them. That’s why this week, the majority of my colleagues and I passed three pieces of legislation that will help our veterans. To learn more, check out my Ask Tom video below.

Progress Made by a Unified Government

For the first time in years we have a unified government working together to roll back the harmful and burdensome regulations enacted by the Obama Administration. I am so excited with the amount of progress that has been made over the course of one month, and I know that we will continue to do so in the coming days. Check out the graphic below to see the progress made thus far.

Once again, thanks for staying up to date with the work I am doing for Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District. Until next week…

Sincerely,
