News from Representative Smucker

Thank you for subscribing to my E-Newsletter! This week I want to update you on my work on behalf of our veterans and their families, share some stellar economic news, and make sure you know where I am visiting in the district

I enjoy hearing from you and responding to your questions via email, phone calls, and letters. If you'd like to share your concerns or opinions with me, or if you have questions about legislation or specific votes, you can send me an email here. To stay up-to-date on my work in Pennsylvania and Washington, be sure to follow me on Facebook and Twitter. You can also check out my YouTube page here where there are 100+ videos, many of which are direct responses to your questions.

I'm also extraordinarily proud of the casework my office has been able to complete for constituents. More than 1,800 cases have been completed, and more than $650,000 has been returned to constituents. The top four federal agencies with which you've requested help are the Social Security Administration, Department of Veterans Affairs, Department of State, and Department of Treasury.

If you need help with a federal agency, my office can often help cut through some of Washington's red tape. I'd encourage you to contact my district office at (717) 393-0667 if I can help in any way.

Our veterans, servicemembers, and their families have endured tremendous hardships and made significant sacrifices in their fight to preserve the freedom of the United States. We owe each of them a debt of gratitude we'll never be able to fully repay. But we can, and should, do everything we can to ensure their well-being.

You can read about all my efforts on behalf of our veterans, servicemembers, and their families here, and see some highlights below.

Warrior Wellness Act

I introduced the bipartisan Warrior Wellness Act in September to improve the mental health services provided to servicemembers by the Department of Defense. Some of the greatest wounds inflicted upon our brave service men and women are unseen. We should be treating these wounds as we would any other. Ensuring our troops have access to high-quality mental health services and are properly treated is critical to their safety, the safety of their fellow soldiers, and the effectiveness of our national defense.

Home for the Brave Act

I introduced the bipartisan Home for the Brave act to assist in the fight against veteran homelessness. Our veterans have put their lives at great risk to keep all of us safe back home. Our district has made great strides to eliminate veteran homelessness, and I am proud to stand with my constituents in this noble effort.

Specifically, this legislation would exempt disability benefits from counting as income when determining eligibility for federal housing assistance program. To return home and be priced out of housing assistance simply because a veteran receives service-related disability benefits is just plain wrong, and my legislation would correct this problem.

Expanding Military Apprenticeship Opportunities

America's military is made up of hardworking men and women who wake up every day to serve others. We should be making it easier for them to transition to civilian life with a steady job, and infuse our workforce with leadership skills only the military can provide.

That's why I introduced, and President Trump signed into law, an amendment that expands opportunities for active-duty servicemembers to learn career skills and occupational training. Previously, less than half of our nation's military personnel had access to apprenticeship opportunities, but my legislation ensures every single member of our armed services has access.

If you are a veteran, or if you know a veteran, and you need help with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, I may be able to help. Please contact my district office at (717) 393-0667 if I can help you or someone you know.

American Regains Rank as World's Most Competitive Economy

I recently visited Pennsy Supply Inc. in Manheim (pictured above) where I was shown around their facility and held a town hall with employees. Among many other topics, we discussed America's booming economy and how it is helping lift American businesses to new heights.

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal reported that the United States has regained the top spot in World Economic Forum rankings "thanks to strong economic growth."

Here's a short excerpt from the article:

"The report scores countries on how closely they match up to the competitive ideal. The U.S. scored 85.6 out of a possible 100. America's vibrant entrepreneurial culture and its dominance in producing a competitive labor market and nimble financial system 'are among the several factors that contribute to making the U.S. innovation ecosystem one of the best in the world,' the report said."

This stellar economic news would not possible without the determination and optimistic spirit of American workers. You can read the full article here.

Additionally, you can invite me to visit your business, volunteer organization, or simply set up a meeting with me in one of my offices by emailing me here.

Here's Lloyd!

You can use the interactive map above to see the many different schools, volunteer organizations, manufacturers, and small businesses I've visited since taking office. If you'd like to invite me to visit you or an organization, you can invite me here. You can also schedule a meeting with me in one of my offices here.

You can use the map here or by clicking on the image above.

Since taking office, my staff and I have traveled more than 18,000 miles to meet with constituents. Between all my offices, I've hosted more than 500 meetings with constituents to hear about what's on their mind, and I've participated in more than 160 events with local businesses, schools, civic organizations, forums with constituents, or community resource centers. You can see all of these events using the map. In fact, I've supported more than 65 bills in the House of Representatives directly because of these important meetings -- that's about 1/3 of all the legislation I've cosponsored since taking office.
