News from Representative Tom Emmer

Dear Friend,

Last week, major news came out of Cuba announcing the death of longtime dictator Fidel Castro. The passing of Fidel Castro is yet another reminder that a new day is dawning in Cuba; a Cuba where every citizen has the rights, freedom and opportunity they deserve. Instead of continuing down a path of isolation and exclusion, now is the time for Congress and the new administration to work with the Cuban people and assist in the transition to a democracy and market economy that will improve the lives of the 11 million Cubans living just 90 miles off our coast.

In 2015, I introduced legislation that I know will help the Cuban people with this much needed shift. The Cuba Trade Act will lift the Cuba trade embargo and permit businesses in the private sector to trade freely with Cuba, allowing the Cuban people to learn firsthand that democracy and capitalism are necessary for a better economy and overall way of life.

A Reform that will Save American Lives

We got a lot done in the People’s House this week and one reform that I am especially proud of is the 21st Century Cures Act. This legislation is important because while there are presently 10,000 known diseases, there are only 500 known cures.

This major gap between known diseases and cures makes it more necessary than ever to come together to reform this nation’s health care- and that is just what the 21st Century Cures Act does. Even better, it does so without an increase in spending. To learn more about this vital reform, click here to watch my latest Ask Tom video.

Money for our Troops

Today, I was proud to vote in favor of the National Defense Authorization Act, which will give our troops the largest pay raise in six years. To be more specific, this bill authorizes $619 billion dollars in spending for the Department in Defense, so that the men and women in our armed forces have everything they need and deserve in order to properly defend this nation and return home safely.

The Obama Administration’s indifference to the threats against this nation and the turbulent nature of the world has been unsettling, so it is great to see progress made in improving the effectiveness of our military and ensuring global security.

I Want to Hear From You!

This week I announced that I will be holding another town hall on December 19th in Carver County! I place a high importance on these town halls because the most crucial part of my job is to listen to the people for whom I work. These town halls are a great way for the people of Minnesota’s Sixth District to ask questions, give input and address any concerns they may have, and I am looking forward to having those conversations.

Once again, thanks for staying up to date with the work I am doing in Minnesota and Washington, D.C. Until next week…

Sincerely,
